A riveting legal thriller from Robert Dugoni, New York Times bestselling author of My Sister’s Grave.
In San Francisco’s seamy Tenderloin district, a teenage street hustler has been murdered in a shelter for boys. And the dedicated priest who runs the struggling home stands accused. But despite damning evidence that he’s a killer―and worse―Father Thomas Martin stands by his innocence. And attorney Peter Donley stands with him.
For three years Donley has cut his legal teeth in his uncle’s tiny, no-frills firm, where people come before profits. Just as Donley is poised to move on to a lucrative dream job, the shocking case lands in his lap, and he must put his future on hold while putting his courtroom skills to the test. But a ruthless DA seeking headlines and a brutal homicide cop bent on vengeance have their own agendas. Now, as he unearths the dirty secrets surrounding the case, Donley must risk his neck to save his client’s life…and expose the face of true evil.

The story is fast paced, but is laced with humour that enhanced the characters rather diminishing the awful crime that is unfolding. A really intriguing stand alone novel from an author who is a great story teller.
We meet Peter Donley who works in his uncle's chaotic practice with the Catholic diocese as his main paying client. Because his uncle has a heart attack Peter is thrust into the case. Peter has demons from his childhood that he hasn't come to grips with. And he is considering leaving the practice for a more lucrative job with a more prestigious firm with the blessing of his uncle. But Peter Donley believes the priest and invokes the 7th cannon of law that he will try as hard as possible for his client.
The DA is looking for a headline case to seal his elevation to Governor as was his father before him. The homicide cop who made the arrest has his own agenda and has put the case in doubt because of his evidence collection. Peter has never conducted a homicide case and has a lot of reading even to know the procedure. But he is highly intuitive and has good friends who provide some trails for him to follow.
Peter has no idea when he starts what he is up against and its evil nature. To win the case he has to track down the real killer which leads into a dangerous world. He must also confront his own demons and motives.
The story is well written with a few little niggles every now and again. It maintains a furious pace as there is a time limit set by the judge and it is over the Christmas period. Robert starts to reveal the answers to the riddles as the story progresses but are they a false trail? Close to the end we start to see the depth of some of the relationships and the possible solution only to find another layer. Finally at the end we have a action packed chase and denouement. We see justice done but have we? Read it and see if you are able to guess the ending. Good luck
Robert has excelled in this multi strand story. He is realistic in his descriptions and provides great characterisations. Good description of court room tactics. Peter's internal struggles are well described and provide an effective counter point to the evil without.
good read from Robert Dugoni. Likeable characters and storyline that keeps you interested. Worth your time to read.

A priest, who has set up a safe haven for young troubled males, is accused of murdering one of the young men. Peter Donley has been tasked with defending the priest, in the absence of his uncle Lou- mainstay of a legal firm. There’s so much more going on than meets the eye. The storyline involves corruption, blackmail and other murders. Donley is helped by Frank Ross an ex police officer turned private investigator.
The characterisation is very good and the plot ticks along- not mega exciting but certainly engaging.
Having read this, I would read more by Dugoni.

I thorougly enjoyed it and thought the plot and characters were most realistic.
I didn't rate the previous example, but this may well tempt me to try others.
