A dream is born
20th Century Fox’s story begins in a tiny theater on New York’s Lower East Side. In 1904, fresh from Hungary, 25-year-old William Fox amazed audiences with his magical hand-cranked films. The beginnings were humble – folding chairs, a painted wall for a screen – but the desire to entertain and move people has been at the core of what 20th Century Fox has been doing ever since. By 1915 Fox’s five-cent movie shows were wildly popular and his single screen grew first into a chain of 25 theaters around New York City and then into a movie making business.

Enter here a world where duplicity is all, so many not what they seem.
Thirteen episodes, many disguises convincingly donned as information is uncovered, enemies removed, recruits sought. Elizabeth remains ruthless, dedicated to the cause. Philip is uneasy as killings mount.
Brooding and suspenseful. Complicated too - full attention needed. The season begins with horrendous carnage which has repercussions all the way through - culminating in a shock few (if any) will anticipate.
A tour de force for Teri Russell and Matthew Rhys as Elizabeth and Philip, they heading a cast where all emerge with credit.
Bonuses reveal that more than viewers might realize is based on actual instances - even the ones that seem most far-fetched. They pose the question can such sleepers still be around?
A thought-provoking delve into a very murky world, loyalties tested to the full. Viewers' loyalties also. Should we really be rooting for those representing the enemy? It is a tribute to writers and actors that many of us perhaps do.

That element continues and makes for an enthralling 2nd season as they both stay ahead of the CIA and FBI often quite violently in preserving their secret identities and protecting their two children. I confess that the children play their parts very well and that at no time did I feel that their roles were just padding---- their story lines did add to the sub plot of bringing up two youngsters inside the 'American Dream' while hiding the awful truth that their parents are killers and prostitute themselves to gain advantage.
Probably less sex and violence than in Season 1 but nevertheless there are some unsavory moments that kept my interest going but may offend others.
Seasons 3 and 4 await.

And it's a story easy to love, off-beat and unnerving and with an attention to 1980s details which are fascinating to notice. Convincing acting, an authentic 'feel' and Russians speaking their language over sub-titles gives it a feeling of believability lacking in (too) many thrillers.

The actors are all very good but I save special commendation for Matthew Rhys who is quite brilliant.
