Ace reporter Augusta “Gusto” Nash (Colbert) poses as the wife of imprisoned American pilot Tom Martin (Milland) to save him from execution by Spanish fascists. The gesture lands her a front-page story and the praise of her boss, Mr. Phillips (Walter Abel, Mr. Skeffington). Of course, Tom tries to romance Gusto; but though she likes him, her career comes first, and Tom himself prefers freedom-fighting to settling down. Comedy becomes drama as their mixed feelings lead them on a circuitous path through the deepening chaos and catastrophe of the early days of World War II. Gorgeously shot by Charles Lang (Angel) and co-starring Dick Purcell (The Bank Dick), Dennis O’Keefe (Brewster’s Millions), Esther Dale (The Awful Truth) and George Zucco (The Cat and the Canary), this wonderful blend of action, comedy and melodrama won an Academy Award for Best Original Story. Interesting and quite romantic drama with Claudette Colbert and Ray Milland

Claudette Colbert and Ray Milland have excellent chemistry in this drama set in 1930's Spain and Paris. CC plays an intrepid journalist who through sheer pluck and guts manages to get Ray Milland's PoW realeased, in order to snag a journalistic scoop. The rest of the movie is essentially her wanting to be a career woman and him pursuing her. The two leads are very good and there are some quite romantic scenes. It is also interesting that he is so open about her feelings for her (it strikes me as quite modern, and let's face it, rather attractive and unusual in a movie of that time).

The film is also notable in its interventionst slant, arguing indirectly (and sometimes quite directly) that the US should enter the war.

All this aside, this is a romantic drama, with two leads who really do play very well off one another. Highly recommend it!

The plot is standard boilerplate --- you know precisely what's coming in the next scene. That said, it's always a pleasure to watch Colbert and Milland at their best. And there is a certain amount of comedy to save what is a very serious theme.

Ray Milland and Claudette Colbert have always been favorites of mine and to see them in this is a treat. He's a flyer and she's a journalist (looking to get past the editor's mindset that, as a woman, she can only do fashion features). Milland is a pilot who sees what's up ahead as the Nazis take over country after country so he volunteers in various foreign armies (because the U.S. is not yet in) to do what he can to stop them. When he meets Colbert, there is immediate chemistry but both are passionate about their careers. Great fun!
