Not a favourite but still a pleasant read that I stayed up late to finish.
Things hit close to home for Eve in this one. A body is left in the playground near where Mavis and her family, and Peabody and McNab are renovating their new home. It also brings up Mommy issues for Eve and I was glad to see she dealt with them extremely well. Eve even had a bit of payback to her own self as a child, which I found adorable.
I loved catching up with a host of characters that I really adore and seeing the progress on how their lives are moving forward. Having Jamie being a part of this was also fun. There is also a couple of characters that show a different side to themselves.
The interactions between everyone were as usual a pleasure.
But the story itself, though sad that two women lost their chance at a future, held little tension or edge of the seat excitement. I would have to say it pretty much coasted along with hardly a ripple for me.
The killer was a good twist and I will say I for once felt sorry for what happened to cause his snap.
But the biological mother’s viewpoint that we are given, by going back in time, just made me dislike her and find her a coward. If she had been a decent person, she would have not hidden with the doctor but tried to find out who she was, rather than have six decades of a happy life.
To then do what she did out of guilt was the trigger for the killer.

I enjoyed the clear lines related to the police investigation. I enjoyed the glimpses of the personal lives of the principal characters. Nice to see her books go back to good storytelling with less erotica that had been becoming too prominent in her last few books. It feels like the author is refreshed and has less need for the fillers she was starting to use ie erotica.

I'm not sure how Nora/JD continues to pump out original stories, but they just keep coming. I'm so invested in this series.
This book follows Eve, Roarke, and the gang as she hunts a psycho who, abandoned by his mommy, seeks revenge on her memory. Very gripping!

Ive read every single book in this series, usually enjoy to the max. This one seemed shorter, more quickly written with less depth of plot.
I still enjoyed it a lot ,because i know and love the characters.Must be hard to write over 50 books on the same people, very clever.

One of my favourites from the last few years. Way more focus on the crime and less on the social aspect and the other characters. A good balance to the story and a huge surprise in revealing the killer. Made it feel more like one of her earlier books. Highly recommend.

I got 3 chapters in and stopped reading.
Where is the cagey, edgy tone and the almost abrupt style of writing? I actually believe that this has been written by a ghost writer - either that or Ms Roberts has run out of steam. I have read every Nora Roberts & JD Robb books and her most recent works just seem to have lost the spark.
I’m really disappointed and feel more than a bit let down.
Interestingly, the reviews on the US amazon website, for the most part, tend to agree with me.

How does she do it!!!

To say I’m invested after 54 books is an understatement. I’d read anything in this series and keep going even if they are crap.
This is not.
I loved it.
Didn’t pick the killer.
Thought the twist in the middle made sense but understood when it didn’t.
Love how it’s explained.
It’s been a while since it’s been done from the killers point of view. I both love it and find it creepy.
They are definitely interesting reads.
Love the little character arcs and progressions. Wish they would move a little faster, but that’s how she write them.
I cannot recommend this enough.
Was a stella read. Would have done it in a while sitting if I had had the time.
Cannot wait for the next one.

Disappointing again

Please please, please can JD move on with this series. It became same old, same old about 20 books back. The story lines are monotonous and highly predictable. I guessed who the perpetrator was half way through. I really want to see how the main characters get on with their lives and development of some of the side characters.
If this book is to be believed, Eve and Roarke are coming up on their THIRD wedding anniversary. I thought they were upto about they're 6th/7th by now. I mean how could they have all that's happened (books written, vids released, families found babies growing up) all within a three year period. It just doesn't vibe.
I really should have stopped reading the series way back, loyalty and hope for some forward movement have kept me coming back but the price of the books these days are making it difficult.

Another strong showing from the Author, how she beeps this series going so strong I have no idea 60 + stories and not a.did among them. This starts as usual with a dead body, dumped in a children's playground with a sign on her chest reading Bad Mommy. So begins another case for Eve and Peabody, there is not a lot to go on, whoever did this is smart while they have some clues there's not much to go on and worst of all Eve can't help but feel there's more to come............ Now this book is (as the last several books have been) focused purely on the case which means we don't get much of Roarke again. I do so miss when he doesn't have a strong role in these books, Roarke is not supposed to be a supporting character (which is what he seems to be becoming) but that's a personal gripe. The murderer is Wiley,, the story heartwrenching and it opens up some bad memories for Eve. But as ever she has the stalwart Peabody at her side, a character that continues to delight. This book only landed on my kindle at midnight and I finished it at eight thirty pm same day, I was unable to put it down, even though I keep.promising myself I will read slowly to make it last. Roll on September and the next instalment.

Always five

Fifty four In Death books and, although I haven't written reviews on them all they have always been five star reads. That is a lot of stars.
Initially I got them from my local library then I bought them all for my kindle. That has been a lot of money but I have read them frequently.
Last year I settled down and read them all in order. Absolute bliss.
Eve, Roarke, Peabody, McNab...I won't name them all...are real to me. I see them, hear them, enjoy them. If anyone makes a movie of them I will never watch it because nothing could take the place of my imagined cast.
Okay not a proper review. There are dead people and people who could easily end up dead. Eve's team, including Jamie and Quilla now, work their way through a never-ending tangle of potential clues and very few suspects.
I will admit to not liking the perpetrator when first introduced to us but I would not have added the name to the suspect list. Neither does anyone else till Dr Morris notes that one of the dead was wearing false nails.
Yep, false nails. Quite some jump from that to murder. The denouement is a classic.

I really enjoyed this book, I always wonder how she dreams up her plots, she is amazing. 54 books on and I still enjoy her books, only once did I think it wasn't quite up to standard but having done a re read, I enjoyed it. This plot goes back to the past and comes to the present, it can be disconcerting to begin with, but quite effective. I did not even have a clue as to the perp, so I will enjoy re reading this book to check if there were hints i did not pick up.
I would recommend this book obviously to fans of JD Robb also to anyone who enjoys police procedural books which have a regular cast of characters. This book can be read as a stand alone however I think these books are addictive. So Enjoy.
