After reading All the Light we cannot see by the same author I was really looking forward to this book.
I was not disappointed either. Such a different story but still a great read. Felt as if I was involved in the plot all the way. Family relationships very much revealed.

I read and LOVED All the Light We Cannot See by the same author, so I thought About Grace would move me in the same way. It didn't. While I loved his writing style in the other book, I thought he was way too indulgent in this book -- the snowflakes, too much! I enjoyed that he used them so well in the story, but in my view, he spent too much time and too many words on them.
I struggled with the main character, David. I saw he was broken by his dreams and it was hard to move on, but he was just too tragic for most of the book and it made it hard to will him on.The premise is great, but at times I wished I could skip ahead (my personal curse, I've never been able to do this in any book!) I loved the other characters: Felix, Soma, Herman (surprisingly!!) and Christopher. But Grace and David were too extreme and they had nowhere to go in their development. I would read another of his books but not anytime soon, I need some distance between this one and the next.

Entomologist's dream but not an engaging novel.

Whilst I was a big fan of All the light we cannot see, I cannot say the same for this book. His descriptive prose is second to none and his descriptions of flora and fauna,geography and climate hav spurred me on to do my own investigation and reading but this is a novel not a natural history text book. A novel is a story and great stories require several things for starters investment in and empathy with the characters particularly the main protagonist. Drawn in by the initial part of the book as evidence of the potential promise, excitement and pace to the book it was disappointing to find the inital potential rapidly petering out. Our hero, if you can call him that, is at best a loving dull , myopic father with a gift of foreseeing future events ?( never fully exploited) and at worst a self pitying dullard and stalker who wastes his life away after the opening chapters. The book is overly long the story could be told in half the pages and its conclusion obvious. Doerr's beautiful prose can not stop this from being one of the most irritating books I have read in years. There is only one reasonably rounded and thought out character in the book the rest are really just flimsy window dressing to the very occasional exciting events that occur and the end is predictable. Any good novel requires not only empathy but also the suspension of disbelief which is extremely hard. If a middle aged man you had never met purported to be your real father and took your 4 year old child without permission to his flat you would call the police.
In conclusion a very disappointing, long book with under developed characters supernumerary to the story. Read something else or read it all if you have ocd traits like myself and were taught never to discard a book without reading it first but you have been warned.
So why not 1 star? Well I love insects geography and climate and quite fancy a trip to Alaska.

A really deceptive book that initially hooks you then slows the pace down and presents you with an intriguing central character who is certainly flawed but ultimately earned my sympathy. At the core is a homeric tale of leaving home and stability, exploring a world and life to ultimately “travel” back to your starting point. The prose is absolutely exquisite with peripheral descriptions of things that in any other book I might have found irritating but the author truly makes them worth reading. Very little about the tale is obvious but it sneaks up on you and by half way through the book I found myself constantly picking it up to read another chapter and even though it had to come to an end I found it a complete story. There is a spiritual thread running throughout the tale but it isn’t over powering, simply ticking away in the background waiting to resurface when relevant. Ultimately a redemptive tale but really beautifully written such that it “wins you over” to the central character's trials and tribulations. Just get it and read it - quality.

A very long boring “story” with very little plot, and a depressing main character . I found myself just skim reading through pages and pages, only because I wanted to see whether the main character achieved his goal. Could have been told as a novella at most.
