An all-new, complete 35th anniversary hardcover box set of one of the most acclaimed and influential comics of all time, with the original Japanese art and right-to-left reading format for the first time! The science fiction epic that changed anime and manga forever is presented in six beautiful hardcover volumes, plus the hardcover Akira Club art book and an exclusive patch with the iconic pill design.
In 1982, Kodansha published the first chapter of Akira, a dystopian saga set in Neo-Tokyo, a city recovering from thermonuclear attack where the streets have been ceded to motorcycle gangs and the rich and powerful run dangerous experiments on destructive, supernatural powers that they cannot control. In 1988, the manga was adapted into what was at the time the most expensive animated film ever made, which brought Akira's influence out of the manga world and onto the global stage. Today, it remains a touchstone for artists, writers, filmmakers, and fans, retaining all the brutal impact and narrative intensity it had when Otomo first unleashed it onto the world.

Revised translation and new lettering
The Akira 35th Anniversary set is the definitive way to read Akira, reproducing the art at better quality than any previous version. It also retains the original right-to-left reading format and Katsuhiro Otomo's original hand-drawn sound effects for the first time and features a newly-revised translation to get as close as possible to the originally-intended reading experience.

Top-quality design and production
New dust jackets, interior covers, and all-color endpapers take the look of the Akira manga back to the designs supervised by Katsuhiro Otomo for the Japanese market in the 1980s and 1990s – another first for an English-language edition. The box itself features a dual-hinge, magnetized door for a lasting, dramatic presentation.

Exclusive iron-on patch and art book
The Akira 35th Anniversary box set also includes an exclusive iron-on patch depicting the iconic "Good for Health, Bad for Education" logo as it appears on Kaneda's jacket, plus the Akira Club book, which had long been a sought-after rarity, compiling exhaustive behind-the-scenes information and concept art by Katsuhiro Otomo and his collaborators.

This set comes in a nice sturdy box, the books are all hardcover, and you also get the "Akira Club" book, a collection of title page images (art not directly part of the story) that were in the original 80s manga issues but not in the collected volumes. Akira Club is good but inessential, though not currently sold by itself like the manga volumes are.
Overall, this is a bespoke and ultimate version of the Akira manga - an amazing work of art.

The product box has rub marks all over the inside and has worn the ink away in some spots on the books and product box, see the photo of my hand after I swiped it across the spine of one of the books.
The product box has impact marks on every corner also.
The books themselves are great when it comes to the content within.
I won't be buying any more books from Amazon, they invariably always get damaged.

In terms of the actual story. So far it is great as I've just finished the first book. Highly recommend.

Top reviews from other countries

The design of the books are fantastic, the jackets and hardcover PLC's are really cool and are close to the japanese originals. I too have jackets that fit quite poorly and are wavy. The binding on the 5th book isn't done particularly well and I noticed small scrapes on a couple of the hardcovers but they aren't major. Overall I'd say the quality control is not up to scratch for the RRP of this set. It's a shame that many publishers like Kodansha and Dark Horse (my Hellboy in Hell and other Hellboy Library Editions had several quality control issues, including fingers prints, tears and marks from the presses) are making more premium formats and finishing, but still sourcing the production as cheap as possible and not quality controlling them properly. I work in publishing and have produced many 4 colour books to a great standard from China so the fact it's made there is not the problem. If someone from Kodansha is reading, it would be FANTASTIC if you provided customers with replacement jackets to rectify this issue, the printer may well have a stack left over and it would make a big difference to the quality feel of the books.
There are a few reviews from Amazon US complaining about the book paper. Judging by the way the box has been put together, I'm guessing they used this paper to most accurately reproduce the manga as it appeared originally. Personally I like the black and white art, and it seems a higher standard and heavier weight to the paperbacks and the art looks great. I'm very pleased they did NOT print it all on glossy paper. Comics and Manga back in the day were not designed to be printed on bright white glossy paper. Each book have several blank pages at the back (the books are sewn in 16 page sections as a requirement) so it would've been interesting to try and fill these with more material, there are a few bits that look like print ads from the end of the original japanese collection but it could have had some extra art, be it rough sketches, designs etc. Not a big deal but still.
Akira Club is great, brilliant book I'd seen before but not bought before it went out of print, very glad to have it now.
Overall I'm glad I sold my paperbacks and waited for this. I really like the approach of reproducing the books as close to the design and material of the originals (I might be wrong re. the materials but it seems logical) so if the jackets fitted properly and box wasn't damaged I'd be thrilled. Kodansha UK - send us some replacement jackets and you will have a very happy customer!

The quality of the box set is incredible. The quality of the hardbacks is great. The box fits the books perfectly, and there's real attention to detail - including a mounted cardboard leaf for filling space underneath the main books which are slightly shorter than the art book. The patch is a lovely bonus. And at Amazon's price it's cheaper than buying all 6 books in paperback! If you want to get into the Akira books, I don't think they will be in better quality than this!
I had read reviews of the box getting damaged. Amazon did a lousy job of packing the box: it was sent in a box about 50% larger with some paper for padding (which was obviously squashed by the heavy box of books!). There were some dents in the outer box when received due to so much air. However, the manufacturer has packed this box really well. The box set is stored in two cardboard boxes (each with a DO NOT UNPACK label): one outer box, then an inner box stored in polystyrene 'corner covers', and then the box set. So these two boxes did more than enough to save the poor Amazon packing.

It took two attempts to get this as the first set had a duplicate of Volume 3, one in the Volume 3 dust cover and one in the Volume 6 dust cover. Weird. The presentation box was also dented on the corner as the shipping box had disintegrated when with the courier. I could live with the latter but not the former! (Aside the publisher seems to be replacing the presentation cases for free as there is a known issue with shipping damage).
Amazon great at supplying a replacement anyway.
Oddly although the replacement has all the correct Volumes (and 6 is now present), the dust cover for Volume 6 has a print misalignment along the binding area, which suggests it was printed to fit on a thinner Volume, i.e. about the size of Volume 3. When on the actual proper Volume 6 the binding area shows parts of the rear of the dust cover. I think there was obviously some kind of production fault going on with this series!
Anyway, beyond the above issues, the actual story, the japanese style presentation and the overall package still deserves 5 stars.

However, I needed two set to be sent out to me as the first one arrived without the patch and dirty finger marks, missing inserts and misprinted slip-covers suggested to me that I was originally sent a return - in fact I am certain I was as it was also packed in a single box with just bubble-wrap. The replacement came in 3 boxes and seals to show it had not been opened since it left the factory. Angry that spending £100 on a new item gets you a return, missing an item, but Amazon sorted it for me and sent a replacement in two days - just be aware and check yours carefully when you get it.
I'd been hoping to get it a bit cheaper, but decided to bite the bullet in case it goes out of print or something like that. At £100 it is expensive, but worth it.
