88 films why did you change it???????????
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 July 2018Verified Purchase
the film itself gets a 4 star rating. the disc is an infuriation by 88 films. once again 88 release a blu ray shortly after a dvd. although this time inferior. yes the picture is slightly better, but the sound is worse, particularly at one point in the 1st scene in the kitchen. my other issue is the use of a more modern opening credit listing brooke shields as the star. obviously trying to flog a rerelease under a different title, using her star status at the time. if you dont have the original 88 dvd (which is not on amazon anymore) buy the blu ray. if you have it. stick with it.

Expertly remastered.

I recall seeing this as a 17 year old in 1977,under the title 'Communion' and finally found it by typing in that title on YouTube. I hadn't realized it had been released under the titles, 'Alice,Sweet Alice' and 'Holy Terror'. I'm so pleased I managed to track it down and to be able to buy it. I'd forgotten what a great little film it is. Also, as it's been 'cleaned up' it is a very well resmastered product. Okay, it didn't scare the bejaysus out of me watching it this time round but at 59 no horror film from the 70s is going to have me checking under the bed, lol. It was just a little trip down memory lane.

A Flawed Offering
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 October 2017Verified Purchase
The film:
This is definitely a cult classic that deserves more views. While performances are at times histrionic and the narrative a bit lackluster, "Alice, Sweet Alice" is an ambitious film touching on religious zeal, sexual repression and pedophilia. There's enough ingenuity with respect to the horror and character development to warrant my solid recommendation.
The disc:
I purchased this from 88 Films since the Anchor Bay release has been long out of print. I was expecting a considerable improvement due to the anamorphic widescreen and high bitrate encode, but what I got was a waxy mess. Despite the image being free of compression artifacts as well as windowboxing, the aggressive digital noise reduction (DNR) wiped away all fine detail. The viewing experience was akin to watching a flash video. This begs the question: why even bother with such a high bit rate?

ALICE SWEET ALICE AKA Communion AKA Holy Terror, Uncut 88 FILMS
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 March 2014Verified Purchase
On the day of her first communion Karen, Brooke Shields, is murdered by someone in a mask and yellow plastic raincoat. Suspicion soon falls upon her sister Alice, Paula Sheppard.
Creepy early slasher classic Alice Sweet Alice finally gets a decent release from 88 Films. There are one or two signs of age, but otherwise the picture quality is pretty good.
Alice Sweet Alice Aka Communion Aka Holy Terror is a way above average 70s slasher film that makes the most of it's New Jersey setting. Heavy doses of catholic imagery give the film a great morbid atmosphere of oppressive guilt with psycho sexual overtones. The killer owes a small debt to Don't Look Now, but the mask and knife point the way to later films. Paula Sheppard was 19 years old when the film was made and is great in the title role as the ambiguously motivated Alice.
Extras
Audio Commentary from the film's director Alfred Sole, editor Edward Salier and William Lustig, not credited on the case.
The original and misleading trailer for the film under the title Holy Terror which emphasizes Brooke Shields
Alternative title sequence for the same film as Communion
Stills Gallery
Booklet by Calum Waddell
Reversible cover with the original artwork
Trailer Park for other 88 Films releases.
The aspect ratio is 1:85.1

Bare bones

Good, classic slasher flick, but..
Why isn't the Alice, Sweet Alice (Special Edition) Blu-ray available outside region A?? That one includes:
Brand new 2K restoration of the theatrical version from the original camera negative
High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) presentation
Original uncompressed mono audio
Optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing
Brand new audio commentary with Richard Harland Smith
Archival audio commentary with co-writer/director Alfred Sole and editor Edward Salier
First Communion: Alfred Sole Remembers Alice, Sweet Alice - director Alfred Sole looks back on his 1976 classic
In the Name of the Father - brand new interview with actor Niles McMaster
Sweet Memories: Dante Tomaselli on Alice, Sweet Alice - filmmaker Dante Tomaselli, cousin of Alfred Sole, discusses his longtime connection to the film
Lost Childhood: The Locations of Alice, Sweet Alice - a tour of the original Alice Sweet Alice shooting locations hosted by author Michael Gingold
Alternate Holy Terror Television Cut
Deleted scenes
Alternate Opening Titles
Trailer and TV Spot
Original screenplay
..
The region B version is just the bare bones version, albeit with a commentary track. And what's worse, they've changed the opening titles in order to list Brooke Shields as the star! She's in the movie for like 10 minutes.
However, all in all it's a good movie, the restoration looks splendid on my 4k tv and you get what you pay for.
I just wish someone would see the light and release the special edition outside of region A/NTSC!
