5.0 out of 5 starsIt’s all about stability.
Reviewed in Australia on 8 May 2021
Let’s get the negatives out of the way first. This isn’t the router for you if raw performance is what you’re after. Download speeds top around the 750mbps region running gigabit fibre (on both my devices). That’s about 50-100mbps less than it’s competition, but this isn’t necessarily a bad thing (I’ll get back to this in a sec). Understandably gigabit speeds isn’t a luxury everyone can have, so ping speeds perhaps would be worth looking at. But once again, nothing much to write home about. Running terminal on an M1 mac saw speeds of about 4-6ms. Interestingly however, I saw similar ping speeds with the 2nd gen eero cupcakes while downloads where in the 600mbps ballpark (500mbps on my iPhone 12)

But these aren’t even negatives to everyone’s eye. Here are the positives then. Set up process is second to none. These top the google wifi systems for having a killer intuitive (and polished-ly good looking) app. But eero’s strongpoint is in its motto - stability. These systems sacrifice that small bit of performance for the pursuit of stability and it delivers. I didn’t face any downtime, slowdowns or anomalies that made me felt like it needed a restart. That’s a departure from my first taste in wifi 6 with tp-link’s Deco X60. That had even better performance but had poor band steering and fast roaming (the bit that switches which wifi point you’re connected to). Then one of its puck got stuck into a boot loop and is now serving as paperweight (even the physical reset button does nothing). This experience is why I value stability / reliability so much because in the end of the day what we want is something that just works!

Final thoughts, If you’ve gotten the eero cupcakes, don’t be tempted. They have about 90% of what’s offered anyway. Otherwise, if you’re fed up with the stability of your current set up I doubt these will disappoint.

(I hope you’ll enjoy them :))

Things to note:
- Speedtests are by no means technical.
- Optimised for video conference and gaming (SQM) turned on didn’t show any noticeable difference. I kept it on for the event where friends are over and decide to hog my upload speeds (only 50mbps lol)
- It’s worth pointing out that the wifi 6 eeros are having some bad rep with really poor performance. Fortunately I’m not experiencing anything I’ve read so far (hence why I felt the need to shed light of the other direction)

1.0 out of 5 starsI Really wanted to like this product
Reviewed in Australia on 3 November 2021
Everything I read about this product made it sound fantastic - ‘trouble free wifi, set and forget’! This was the case for a few months until the eero started dropping 2.4ghz devices randomly and just wouldn’t let them reconnect.

Some of my IoT devices would stop connecting altogether (eero secure was turned off), and getting them to work again required a reboot of the gateway, which would happen every day.

Emails to support were completely unhelpful, and factory resets did nothing.

I really wanted to like this product, but for my home network environment, this device was a seriously regrettable purchase. I’ll be going back to ASUS routers - while not perfect, are way more reliable.

2.0 out of 5 stars There's something intuitively wrong.

1. The built quality is good because of the high price. 2. The initial instalment process was painful and I had to call customer service to help me to do it. 3. Both router and the extenders are extremely hot because they DON'T have any ventilation or holes on the body! I would recommend some other mesh wifi out there. I have been a big fan of Amazon for a while and since Eero is an amazon company, I had high expectations and this time it let me down. Overall, I believe there is a design flaw. Jeff Bezos, if you can read this, please contact me.

2.0 out of 5 stars This is a great modem, however I don't think it's an improvement over my previous router
Reviewed in Australia on 25 October 2021
Configuration: eero 6 RouterVerified Purchase
Eero was a pleasure to setup and use. I had it connected to my NBN box and after switching the NBN box on and off, internet started flowing through.

The App is interesting and setup was easy. However I have had to return the router because of a few reasons.

1. The router determines if the connected device uses 5 or 2.5ghz - this is dumb because certain entertainment devices were stuck with 2.5gHz when they are capable of getting 5ghz with my previous router.

2. Android TV - Eero as far as I know has a known issue with Android smart TVs. The modem provides 2.5Ghz connection to my TCL android tv, and then for the past week for some reason I've had to reset my TV multiple times so that my tv wifi would connect to Eero. Googling this it seems there some IP address issue and if the TV has been off for a while it will not connect again to the TV and the only way would be to hard reset the TV.

3. Speeds are fine, but if you're on a standard NBN plan ie 25, 50 or 100, buying the modem for speeds is irrelevant. If you need it for the mesh capabilities it is great to reduce black spots.

4. Don't know how it is optimised for video calls, I had so many disconnections to teams when connected on this modem on my Lenovo laptop.

Easy to setup and use, but the above issues are significant enough me to not warrant using the modem.

2.0 out of 5 stars The default settings work well. Don't try to change to using NBN / PPoE / iiNet. Don't lose power.
Reviewed in Australia on 12 May 2022
Configuration: 1 Router + 2 ExtendersVerified Purchase
I'm using FTTN NBN in Australia, with iiNet my ISP. The system works fine if you take the default settings and plug everything in to your iiNet modem. Then I tried to get fancy and bypass the iiNet modem. I upgraded the firmware to eeroOS v6.10.0, spent 4 hours on phone calls to customer support (both iiNet and eero), I managed to get the settings working. The trick is to set the VLAN to 2 before changing the WAN to PPoE -- because after you change the WAN settings, Wifi is lost and you can never access the WLAN settings.

Worked well for a week, good speeds throughout the house. However, after a power cycle the VLAN settings are lost from the Android app and the hardware... and you have to start over. Like start over by factory resetting the system and reinstall the whole thing back to the default. So the mesh extender works with iiNet, but you must keep the iiNet router/modem, lose the advanced eero features, and remote speeds are decreased. Or you need the patience of a saint to start from scratch every time you lose power.

There's a fundamental problem with this design: you must have working WiFi on the eero router to change settings, because it is ALL run from an app. So if something goes wrong, you're doomed to revert to a system that can get WiFi going on the eero before you can fix anything. I'm returning it.

3.0 out of 5 stars No web based interface. Monthly subscription required for some features.
Reviewed in Australia on 4 January 2022

The product has solved some wifi access issues in our house and the mesh aspect works well for the most part. I was surprised that I am unable to interact with it at all from my laptop or desktop, the administration is all via an app which is pretty annoying. I also discovered that features I would otherwise be able to use (viewing logs for example) are only available with the Eero secure subscription. It may be a conincidence but I also found wifi started playing up on an older laptop when the subscription free trial ended. I'll probably stick with it for a while but I'll look for a less vendor lock-in option when it is time to upgrade.

1.0 out of 5 stars Doesn’t work with PPPoE; which is half of internet services in Aus.
Reviewed in Australia on 28 November 2021

Having errors setting up, app didn’t have the solution, should tell you it’s connected to a PPPoE system and it’s not compatible, but I had to call and was told to use my old router as a translator.

Disappointing the device can’t handle PPPoE, something so widespread and standard.
