The funny, touching and unpredictable new novel from the multi-million-copy best-selling author of A Man Called Ove.
In a small town in Sweden it appears to be an ordinary day. But look more closely and you'll see a mysterious masked figure approaching a bank.
Two hours later, chaos has descended. A bungled attempted robbery has developed into a hostage situation - and the offender is refusing to communicate their demands to the police.
Inside the building, fear quickly turns to irritation for the seven strangers trapped inside. If this is to be their last day on earth, shouldn't it be a bit more dramatic?
But as the minutes tick by, they begin to suspect that the criminal mastermind holding them hostage might be more in need of rescuing than they are.

Something I didn't expect from this book was such fabulous humour. Yes, it definitely involves sadness and depression but overall, it was just so uplifting and I loved it! I started out in this one with certain perceptions and assumptions about the characters and the situation and was completely surprised. The characters were fantastic and I think the investigating officers in this one, Jim and Jack, were outstanding. The strangers taken hostage, along with the bank robber each had fascinating elements to their stories. Backman is just so incredibly clever in the way he writes, the way he weaves together each of the aspects of the novel sneaking in some fabulous twists. I laughed and I cried. It was truly memorable and this will definitely be one of my favourite books this year. 5🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I enjoyed reading this book it made me happy. The interview sections I found problematic as characters tended to behave unrealistically in order for the author to communicate their behaviour through dialog, and yes it "is a complicated, unlikely story". But sometimes we just need a made up story because we've got enough of real life. 5 stars because, even though the book is not perfect, its a lot more interesting.
If you like Backmans writing style this is definitely one to read.
Perhaps not quite as great as A Man Called Ove, but that's more than okay. Still a wonderful story with sweet surprises. And continue to read this author's catalogue - a real treasure trove
This book will make you laugh out loud, it will make you sad and you will wonder what you would do if you were in the situation. And the ending chapter - it is superb!!
The one caution is the book describes a suicide.

The main things I got from this story was love can make you do idiotic things, and you can never surely know what's happening in someone's life and how they really feel unless you talk to one another.
All of the characters here bonded over their life stories, choices, differences and similarities and although the situation was strange and stressful, the kindness in these strangers was absolute. I really cant praise this book enough. I think I'm going to have a long lasting book hangover with this one!
