4.0 out of 5 starsAnother excellent Moriarty novel
Reviewed in Australia on 28 September 2021
This one is about a tennis family and as sport isn’t my thing I was dubious at first. However, when the materfamilias disappears and it looks as though the paterfamilias might be responsible and the four very different adult kids plus Detective Khoury and her offsider struggle to figure it out, things become very interesting. Turns out that a young woman claiming to be fleeing domestic violence who ended up living with the mum and dad is more than a bit disturbed. What Moriarty does very well is show how a long marriage can be patches of light and dark and she’s particularly good at demonstrating inter generational trauma and its effects. There are also some good chuckle moments, like the receptionist eavesdropping on a phone conversation because her hearing is very good, “which was not her fault “. Like other authors now, care is taken to present characters from a variety of ethnic backgrounds as well, which is refreshing. I’d have to re-read the previous books to see if this is true, but my feeling is that this one is sharper-edged than her previous work. There’s a lot of astute observation of the human condition here. Enjoyed it a lot.

1.0 out of 5 starsCan be bothered finishing ...
Reviewed in Australia on 16 October 2021
I wish I had remembered how disappointed I was by Nine Perfect Strangers.

This is the extremely tedious story of a family of unlikeable people where the mother disappears.
I can't finish it because I really don't care what happened to her.
I tried to get interested and skipped ahead to see if it got better.
I have always finished books - even ones I don't like - until now.

3.0 out of 5 stars Another classic Liane Moriarty tale - but perhaps a bit predictable in its unpredictability

There's a particular formula that a Liane Moriarty book will follow. Multiple perspectives on a story but told in such a way as to constantly hide important details from the audience and keep them guessing. Which is very interesting in many of her stories, but this one felt a bit more contrived than her more famous stories like Big Little Lies. Like I have read enough Liane Moriarty to know that whatever the reader first thinks is going on in the story, isn't. And therefore I'm constantly expecting a twist. Which means that when the twist happens it's not very surprising. In fact the ending to this story I felt was a bit anticlimactic. The most interesting characters in the story were the rich brother and the ageing hippie sister. And the pathological liar character - her motivation was way less interesting than I thought it would be. Anyway. I still enjoyed the read but it wasn't her best work.

3.0 out of 5 stars a slow burn mystery with mixed reviews

Notes:
- It is a bit of a slow burn (long book at 467 pages)
- A lot of people think the ending is a little disappointing...I'll leave that up to you
- A lot of people say it's over written and bit pointless
- I'm kind of on the fence with this book, it was okay for me

Would I recommend this?
- Hard to say, I'm not sure what you like but it was okay. If you're unsure, just borrow it

3.0 out of 5 stars Lost the momentum in the middle

I looked forward to reading this, even preordered it. It started off well but lost all momentum in the middle. I really had to push myself to finish it, taking well over a week. I normally read 3 books in that time! Sorry Liane, but this was not your best.

The book was a slow read with multiply plots. Even now after reading it I find it hard to define the main story. Was it Joy and Stan or Savannah?

3.0 out of 5 stars Light hearted family drama
Reviewed in Australia on 25 September 2021
2.5 stars rounded up
Apples Never Fall is the latest standalone book by Liane Moriarty. This is my second book by this author, the first being Nine Perfect Strangers.

The story follows the Delaney family, Joy and Stan and their 4 adult children, Amy, Troy, Brooke and Logan. The story revolves around the mystery of Joy Delaney's disappearance. What really happened to Joy and is it somehow tied to the young women who showed up one night claiming she is fleeing from an abusive partner.

While the mystery of Joy's disappearance is part of the story, dont go in expecting a thrilling mystery novel. At the heart of this story is a family and the relationships, expectations and complexities of life. The characters are rich, interesting and believable. I particularly liked the character of Joy. Her voice felt unique, fun and I felt invested in finding out what happened to her.

The story is told in third person and focuses on all of the characters  This gives insight into each person and their lives. Overall the tone of the book was light-hearted, quirky and humorous.

The downside of this for me was the pace and end. Ultimately I expected more and kept waiting for something significant to happen. I found it quite slow at times and overly detailed, focusing on things which I felt didn't add much overall (e.g. one of the characters migraines). This story very much was heavily focused on character development. There was one interesting twist but I felt it came a bit too early on in the story. Overall I felt let down and disappointed by the ending. I expected something more than that after the build up for the whole book.

The author delivered a complex, and character driven story about life, ambition and family. I'd recommend this book to anyone who enjoys family dramas or general fiction set in modern day present time. I didn't hate this book, but I didn't love it either. It was just okay for me. Ultimately it just wasn't for me, I'd have enjoyed a more fast paced mystery with a different resolution.

Having read all of Liane Moriarty's books I was thrilled when this came out. However like her last one it just does not compare in any way shape or form to the genius that was "The Husband's Secret" or "Big Little Lies" It used to be said that authors have one great book in them, well Liane Moriarty had many more than one, but this is not one of them. Boring, repetitive and of no interest, except perhaps to tennis players. Sorry, hope there may yet be another Great one.

I got distracted reading it, it didnt have that intriguing element to keep you guessing. I couldn't wait to finish, just to finish, to be honest because i paid more for this book than i usually do and didnt want to give up. It just didn't come together for me in the intrigue and psychological stakes.

I found this book quite hard going and didn't really like the characters very much. I think you have to be keen on tennis as well.
