When I started to read this book I thought, "oh no it's going to be too Godly." But it wasn't, it was spiritual yes but it was perfect. Not just for writers or artists per se, but for anybody pursuing anything in life. This book has it all.

I was very keen to get this book recommended by so many of my artistic friends........however, for me, just too much writing and required early in the day which didn't suit my lifestyle at all.......still I've on-sold it to another artist who was very happy to receive it.

Set up to be read & followed over a 3 month period. I just finished week 12. Words cannot describe the impact this book has had on me. I feel immensely grateful to Julia for writing this book. My life feels changed forever. I feel healed, transformed...resurrected. Buy the book, doubt you'd regret it.

the artist's way is more than a book, it's a 12 week program to reconnect you with your lost creativity. the creativity deep within us we have forgotten or been too afraid to embrace.
it took me almost 18 months to complete the program: starting, stopping, beginning again.
i am so delighted to say that i did finish the program, i did complete all the exercises and i feel i have unblocked my creativity.
if you follow the program it does work.

I adore anything by Julia Cameron. This book is an absolute masterpiece! I have moved house and haven’t been able to find my copy of the book, and have been in a panic, so this is the next best thing, til I do. - I would have preferred an audiobook, but unfortunately it’s not available in Australia, without signing up with Audible. But I’m thrilled with this, as I start the 12 week ‘Artist’s Way’ course this week.

I am still working my way through this - it has a lot of exercises and thought provoking statements that I am taking my time with. I found the book challenging in all the right ways and it provided a number of channels to unlock creativity and innovation and to explore connections between our inner and outer selves.

One of the greatest awakenings of all time, this book literally saved my soul. This should be taught to all recent high school graduates.

More about God than art
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 March 2021Verified Purchase
I was so disappointed with this. All the great reviews failed to mention the amount of coverage God gets in this book! I made the mistake if thinking "spiritual" would mean just that and that "art" would come first. I tried to keep an open mind and persevered for some time but by halfway through the "God" content had outstripped any reference to art and I gave it up as a waste of time. I was looking for a way to reconnect with my artistic side and although I'm not religious, I am perfectly open to spirituality as a whole. This starts off alluding to spirituality as being whatever you want it to be, but VERY quickly that becomes "God this, God that" which I honestly find overbearing and narrow minded, especially in a book that's meant to be opening and widening your mind. I'm cross I paid so much for a book that seems to be trying to brainwash me into believing that "God" will give me anything I want or need if I believe in "him." This book needs to be honest about its purpose and methods. I feel ripped off and rather bullied. If you believe in a god of some sort of want to, then you'll likely be very pleased with this. If you're more open minded and realistic (yes you can be both!) but want to learn how to connect and expand your artistic connection and abilities then steer well clear. I'm not even going to give this to a charity shop.... It's going in the recycling bin (which shows how strongly I feel as I would normally consider destroying any book a crime).

It's only ok.

Be aware, this is SO religious and is full of references to God. Very tiresome when I'm wanting to do art and not be proselytised to.

Every creative should have a copy
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 January 2018Verified Purchase
I thought this was a book of arty challenges to get the creativity going.. actually it's so much more and undoubtedly the most useful book I've read in a long long time.
The premise is Julia Cameron wondered why some people become 'blocked', as in writers block, but also in terms of being able to create and enjoy creating naturally and freely. She wondered why so many folk who 'always wanted to be an artist' never pick up a brush. The results of her mullings and own journeys were this book.
It's a course of insightful personal exercises to enable you to free up and unblock your creativity. Each chapter has a theme; "Recovering a sense of..." Safety, Identity, Power, Integrity, Possibility... etc. Each chapter finishes with a range of hands-on self reflective tasks/challenges you do for yourself which continue the process and put it into practice.
I was taken aback by how deeply and insightfully the prose in the book spoke to me; I have scarcely read something which does that. Though I was skeptical of the bold claims made in the opening chapter as soon as I started doing the tasks, Bam!, I was creating again. That novel I always wanted to do I am now doing, those art classes I was too nervous to take I am now taking...
A very valuable book. And don't be put off by thinking it's all just personal meditations - the exercises are practical 'Do X' and as you do it you begin to see stuff happen.

Disappointing
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 May 2021Verified Purchase
I found it impossible to get over the constant and totally unnecessary references to God, Creator and similar imaginary entities. After a few pages I realised I won't be able to get any useful information out of this book as reading it is extremely annoying. Shame my return window is closed now, what a waste of time and money. I don't understand how the book has received so many positive reviews, the content that I did manage to read was repetitive and self-promoting.

Why, god, why? – Wieso "göttliches" ins Spiel bringen?
Reviewed in Germany on 1 July 2020Verified Purchase
Dinge wie "The great creator", "Creativitiy is God's gift", "divine plan" - und mein "Favorit" "...we open ourselves to God: good orderly direction", machen es mir unmöglich, das Buch weiter zu lesen.
