The memoir from Australia's much-loved comedian, Hannah Gadsby, whose stand-up show and self-described swan-song, Nanette, played to sold-out houses in Australia, the UK and the US. Its launch on Netflix, and subsequent Emmy and Peabody wins, took Nanette (and Hannah) to the world.
'There is nothing stronger than a broken woman who has rebuilt herself,' Hannah Gadsby, Nanette.
Multi-award-winning Hannah Gadsby transformed comedy with her show Nanette, even as she declared that she was quitting stand-up. Now, she takes us through the defining moments in her life that led to the creation of Nanette and her powerful decision to tell the truth - no matter the cost.
Gadsby's unique stand-up special Nanette was a viral success that left audiences captivated by her blistering honesty and her ability to create both tension and laughter in a single moment. But while her worldwide fame might have looked like an overnight sensation, her path from open mic to the global stage was hard-fought and anything but linear.
Ten Steps to Nanette traces Gadsby's growth as a queer person from Tasmania - where homosexuality was illegal until 1997 - to her ever-evolving relationship with comedy, to her struggle with adult diagnoses of autism and ADHD and finally to the backbone of Nanette - the renouncement of self-deprecation, the rejection of misogyny and the moral significance of truth-telling.
Equal parts harrowing and hilarious, Ten Steps to Nanette continues Gadsby's tradition of confounding expectations and norms, properly introducing us to one of the most explosive, formative voices of our time.

I loved this book, I read it slowly and had to go away and think about it for days before coming back to it. Not a 'light' read. A necessary one if we are ever to get over how 'opinions' can be weapons, and 'jokes' can be bullying, even the ones we tell ourselves about ourselves. Thank-you, again, Hannah Gadsby.
I was especially interested in how she navigated life prior to her ADHD and ASD diagnoses, as some of my friends and a family member have recently been assessed, and there appears to be more awareness now of these conditions. It's heartbreaking how much people have suffered before getting answers, and I'm astounded by Gadsby's resilience through these hardships, but also her modesty in her success.
Her story really hits you in the feels, and I laughed out loud a few times. I really enjoyed this.
I throughly recommend this book to... well, everybody. Read it!
I dislike my mum less knowing that not all families look like laundry detergent ads...and that love and support are communicated in diverse ways.
I also loved reminiscing about tamagochis, and learning the history of legal reform in tassie relating to homosexuality.
Self-insight is incredibly difficult for me, and it's great Hannah Gadsby has been so generous to share her experiences, through reading I've found a few pieces of my own puzzle and new ideas for management strategies to add to my autism toolbox. Thanks so unbelievably much.
The book is exceptionally good. A great insight with raw honesty and humour and an excellent sense of telling her own story her way, not dictated by other's expectations. Much more than what was in the Nanette show, well worth the read. Well done Hannah!
Hannah was born in Smithton. This is a place that I know quite well. I like Smithton and I like its people but I can understand that if you don't quite fit into its norms, it could be a difficult place to live. It is a heck of a long way from the Sydney Opera House, that's for sure! And not just geographically speaking.
This book is a no-holds barred story of Hannah's life, to date. What makes her tick, what she has gone through, her influences etc. What I found the most interesting is that as she slowly comes into her own, she gets stronger, and even though the process is sometimes excruciating she comes out of it with a confidence in her own gifts and that is powerful, to me. I am a fair bit older than Hannah, and I am only NOW working these things out for myself.
I think she is amazing, not just because of her comedic talent and what she has endured, but because she knows HERSELF. She knows who she is, what she is comfortable with, even how she prefers to dress (she loves blue) and what she needs to do, to lower the overwhelm in her life. I really admire her for all of that.
A powerful, insightful book. Looking forward to what is ahead for Hannah Gadsby.
4.5 stars from me.
Part memoir, part history lesson (yes, homosexuality was not decriminalised in Tasmania until 1997), and part reminder that neurodiversity takes many forms, and so much more. Hannah’s honesty and humour leaven what might otherwise be a traumatic account of her life and experience.
‘For me, stand-up comedy was always an act of self-portraiture.’
Recommended reading.

This is pure Hannah Gadsby, brutal honesty, dry humour, laced with moments of whimsy and moments of pain. I'm glad I've read this.

This remarkable woman has smashed through the patriarchy and spoken the truth that the world needs to hear. I can't wait to see what comes next.
