Product description

A family has been massacred in their own house, the setting of a grisly crime in small-town Virginia. Hidden in the basement, the partially buried body of a murdered woman is discovered. Drawn into the mysterious case, coroner Tony Tilden (Brian Cox) and his son Austin (Emile Hirsch) conduct an otherwise routine late-night autopsy on the unidentified corpse. But as the night crawls on, the autopsy becomes more complex than they ever imagined and the two men discover less about the victim and more about their own primal fears. Trapped in their own basement, haunted by the many creepy apparitions that penetrate the darkness and surrounded by the evil unknown, the coroners will need more than a simple scalpel to survive this night of visceral terror.

The police investigate the mysterious deaths of a family in their home, but find a half buried body of a young woman in the basement. When the body is delivered to the morgue, the attendants find there is more to the body than they initially thought, as strange events begin to occur.

The film starts out well with the mystery of the young woman stumping everyone; then we meet the morgue attendants who are father and son. The acting is good and the autopsy scenes are graphic (not great to watch while eating). But in the second half of the film the mysteries begin to unfold and the film deteriorates at a fairly rapid rate. It's really only the performances of the two lead actors and their great chemistry that win the film a rating of 3.5 stars.

Excellent creepy horror film with lots of atmosphere the tone of dread maintains throughout and continues to the end. Saw a lot of horrors in 2017 it seemed like they were all the same just possession after possession after possession that it became tiresome and embarrassing. Out of the 30ish horror films I saw in 2017 only four including The Autopsy of Jane Doe were films I enjoyed. Annabelle Creation, Get Out and It all had there merits and few flaws only two were original and not sequels but compared to the huge amount of cheap forgettable horror movies like Rings, Eloise, The Bye Bye Man, Anna etc they are classics in my book. Set at a morgue late at night a Mortician and his son get a corpse which a police officer needs to be checked for the clues to how she died and who is responsible. Simple premise but with lots to enjoy from start to end lots of horror films could learn a lot from this. Both actors do a great job and the Director even more so. One of my favourite films of the year.

Its a simple story been done loads of time (not very good),A n young girl is brought to a father/son coroners ,Not a mark on her ,police want to no what happened to her who she is (there was other victims they were all marked etc) This is atmospheric ,not for the squeamish , such simple story but scary .

Sometimes good word of mouth leads you to a sleeper hit like this. I deliberately avoided any trailers & I highly recommend you go in blind like I did because it was genuinely one of the best horror films I've ever seen. I was glued to the screen from minute one.

It's a true original. Very scary, very clever, with a deceptively simple premise (it's basically set in one place with a small cast). A Jane Doe is brought in to the morgue of a father & son team (Brian Cox & Emile Hirsch) who begin an autopsy & find some very strange things. I'll say no more.

You will likely figure out what's going on before the characters do but that only adds to the suspense. My one note would be the ending, which obviously I won't spoil, but otherwise this was a near perfect experiment in suspense & terror.

I have always loved horror and often disappointed at ‘new’ films as often they feel like they remind you of another. It’s a difficult one to go into the plot with out spoilers so I will avoid that: but it is very well acted, suspenseful and most of the horror is in the mind and you are never quite sure which way it is going, as it twists and turns like a snake. I have already watched it twice and it has stayed with me so had to purchase a copy for a rewatch, you will want to see this (if you enjoyed it!) at least twice.

Great actors, likeable characters and a very satisfying ending. A sequel would not be needed and probably be disappointing but I’m sure a prequel will happen one day. Enjoy!

I don't want to give any of the plot away but simply to say that this is one of the finest horror films I have seen in many years. Brian Cox is one of my all time favourite actors who can handle comedy, sci-fi, history well, just about anything and he was perfect in this film. Ably assisted by Emile Hirsch this plot gradually introduces the viewer into the idea that "There is something not quite right here", and so there isn't. The build up to the finishing crescendo will have your knees knocking, popcorn widely spread and Coca Cola all up your front.
It is well worth seeing, don't miss it.
