Crackingly good episodes, annoying and intrusive anti-piracy segments

Boston Legal is American entertainment at its best. A few years old now but it hasn't dated. Some of the episodes deal with challenging issues but the writers have managed to pul of the difficult feat of treating them with the seriousness they deserve yet retain the underlying humour which is so much part of the show. First class acting throughout by both the regular cast but also the guest stars. So why only 4 stars? Each episode fully deserves 5 stars but at the start and end of each episode you are treated to an extended sermon on illegal copying and downloading. Fair enough at the beginning and end of each disc but each episode? It's very annoying for those of us who don't want to do anything illegal but does anyone really think it will deter anyone who does?.

Funny , irreverent but still relevant, social commentary which resonates today despite its age, fabulous acting , characters, story lines and dialogue. It has the full gambit of life events through the legal practice and you experience every emotion known to man, but with smart humour being the overriding factor. I was given the boxset from a friend as I didnt see it when it was originally broadcast, and I am addicted. I have since bought it for other friends who watch it again and again. I defy anyone not to feel good after watching an episode. Of course the relationship between William Shatner and James Spader despite being at polar ends of the political divide underpins the whole show, but there are so many fabulous characters it is impossible to mention them. It is American comedy and satire at its best , you will not stop laughing.

The characters are very well played, the writing is sharp and doesn't flinch at highlighting issues in the US and the judicial system. Adult at times but always with a soft touch. Resonates as a legal-eagle version of MASH, with comedy-gold mixed in with serious messages and issues.

James Spader (akin to the Hawkeye character in MASH) steals virtually every scene he is in.

To say this is just a comedy would do it a huge disservice it is very funny but it can deliver great drama ,it is extremely well written and if you have never seen this remarkable series you owe it to yourself, it can handle difficult subjects with the deftest of touches but it will make you laugh out loud, there is no doubt that these are caricatures but they are human ,hope that makes sense enjoy this because its gold

Stunning Legal Comedy Drama

I'm not a fan of American drama on the whole but this has everything. It's outstandingly funny, poignant, sad, relevant and tackled some of the main issues that beset America during its run (2004-2008). Set in a prestigious law firm, Crane, Poole & Schmidt, internal battles are put aside as the individual lawyers battle often nonsensical cases brought by plaintiffs battling corporate vested interests or power hungry district attorneys. Add into the mix more than a sprinkling of sex that often misfires and the series never fails to excite or surprise. There are too many standout characters to name them all but James Spader as the mercurial Alan Shore and William Shatner as the bombastic but dementia affected senior partner Denny Crane ("never been beaten - never will") are wonderful. For me the series really didn't take off until Candice Bergen arrived on the scene as senior partner Shirley Schmidt to bring order to the firm whose bottom line is always the cynical 'how much can you bring to the firm?' The interaction between the characters is well drawn; however I find the variety of judges that the firm battles with to be a highlight - Henry Gibson plays one to whom everything is just "shocking". The issues they tackle are/were topical and relevant - good example is when Denny Crane is prohibited from flying with his latest sex object because Homeland Security can't distinguish him from othe Denny Cranes. Finally you're always kept in suspense as they don't always win!
