Danger Mouse
4.0 out of 5 starsDoesn’t stray far from the author’s other two novels
Reviewed in Australia on 30 September 2021
If you are a fan of Irish millennial author, Sally Rooney, and her other two novels, Conversation with friends, and, Normal people, you are probably in for a treat. That is, unless you felt that these two works said everything you wanted hear on love, friendship and living as an intellectual, hip, 20 something in Ireland in our current times. All in all, the latest novel is an easy read. The style is economical and lean, like a contemporary Hemingway. It probably plays to Rooney’s strength in not straying to far thematically or narratively from Rooney’s other works. Worth a read.

2.0 out of 5 starsDidn't get all the hyper about this one.
Reviewed in Australia on 15 September 2021
My first taste of Sally Rooney and sadly, probably my last. I didn't enjoy this book at all. I found it long winded and aimless (I feel like I was missing the point of it all?) Characters were obnoxious and not even likeable so I struggled to take to any of them. Those long winded emails were a drag to read! Started losing patience halfway in, and it didn't get any better. Ended up skimming the rest just to finish it. Here's a quick summary - Four people: they like each other, don't like each other, are intimate, then not intimate, and somewhat depressed. And that's it. Ending didn't offer any resolve or bring anything new.

4.0 out of 5 stars Raises thought-provoking questions for our times!

The stream of consciousness dialogue is sometimes uncannily incisive and resonates loudly with the audience. The character of Felix, the main protagonist's squeeze, is the most vivid and well drawn that he speaks to you "and that"!

This is not Normal People but it's not trying to be. It's a clever observation of relationships between lovers, friends, authors and fame, politics, the climate and the "beautiful" world.

Each three dimensional character fits the others like a mis matching jigsaw.

I found the philosophical letters between the characters difficult to read but enjoyed the friendships, relationships and detail of the human condition Sally brings to her writing.

A must read for fans of Normal People .

Bogs down in the middle, with characters searching for meaning, mainly through sex, which they do not find before settling on traditional roles and consolations.

Seeing and hearing the young characters in this book was a really illuminating journey. They constantly question themselves. Wonderful outcomes.

The dialogue and characters felt familiar to those in NP and CWF…and there lacked substance in the storyline. However I did find myself invested in the characters by halfway and resonated with many of the topics discussed. Worth a read.

I've been a typical sally rooney fan for a while and eventually got the urgue to buy this book but not gonna lie it's worth the hype!! I personally really like the effort she've been putting to each of the character Alice,Felix,Eileen and Simon to describe their different kind of emotions, and this book got a clear idea of a person who is going through psychiatric breakdowns and mental health problems also the small details in this book is exquisite to read too and last but not least she doesn't use any Quotation marks which is in my perspective is pretty significant ☺️

4.0 out of 5 stars Rooney sendo Rooney - para o bem e para o mal
Reviewed in Brazil on 22 September 2021

Qualquer um deles poderia se chamar Conversation with friends, Normal people ou Beautiful world, where are you?

4.0 out of 5 stars Just giving into the hype
Reviewed in Canada on 2 November 2021

Does “Beautiful World, Where Are You” live up to its infinite amount of hype?
No.
Is it a delightfully neurotic and overindulgent view of life right at this moment? The story of people exactly my age? Feeling adrift, lonely, a little bit in love?
Yes, indeed.

I blew through this book and enjoyed Sally Rooney’s storytelling immensely. It’s a slow-moving dialogue-driven book that delivers poignant insight.

Alice, a well-known and wealthy author, moves to the Irish countryside after an elusive “mental breakdown”. Most of the book is her email exchanges with her best friend, Eileen. Both loving and intellectual, these exchanges hint at an underlying unhappiness and tension.

Worth reading!

I was lost initially, maybe that's what the author wanted us to be like. The dilemmas and unspoken feelings we feel beautifully translated into words. It was mildly disorienting to read ourselves.
Well... Good read at the end of the day.
Choose to read it at your own risk.
