Danger Mouse
4.0 out of 5 starsDoesn’t stray far from the author’s other two novels
Reviewed in Australia on 30 September 2021
If you are a fan of Irish millennial author, Sally Rooney, and her other two novels, Conversation with friends, and, Normal people, you are probably in for a treat. That is, unless you felt that these two works said everything you wanted hear on love, friendship and living as an intellectual, hip, 20 something in Ireland in our current times. All in all, the latest novel is an easy read. The style is economical and lean, like a contemporary Hemingway. It probably plays to Rooney’s strength in not straying to far thematically or narratively from Rooney’s other works. Worth a read.

2.0 out of 5 starsDidn't get all the hyper about this one.
Reviewed in Australia on 15 September 2021
My first taste of Sally Rooney and sadly, probably my last. I didn't enjoy this book at all. I found it long winded and aimless (I feel like I was missing the point of it all?) Characters were obnoxious and not even likeable so I struggled to take to any of them. Those long winded emails were a drag to read! Started losing patience halfway in, and it didn't get any better. Ended up skimming the rest just to finish it. Here's a quick summary - Four people: they like each other, don't like each other, are intimate, then not intimate, and somewhat depressed. And that's it. Ending didn't offer any resolve or bring anything new.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nothing really happens

Another book about the life of a writer! One who makes it and one who does not? Is this meant to be autobiographical? Don't know, and after reading this, I don't care I was so bored! In my experience of people, even smart, intellectual ones, they do not spend their time writing very boring, lengthy emails to each other about the meaning of life/ capilatism/ beauty and truth etc. We did Keats and beauty and truth at school many years ago - really, could the author not find anything more interesting to discuss? This is a book exploring the relationships of 4 people, but I would say that the characters do not really grow and nothing really happens except a few unrealistic sex scenes in amongst the monologues, however well written they are.

2.0 out of 5 stars Don’t think I can finish it…

I was really looking forward to reading this book but having got half way through and still struggling to identify a plot or relate to any characters, I think I’m going to stop reading it. I loved Conversations with friends and Normal People but I’m genuinely finding all the characters in this boring. Finding myself skim reading to try and get through some of it and don’t think I can put myself through another detailed sex scene. Not for me.

2.0 out of 5 stars The lady can write - but is it readable

I have been trying very hard to finish this confusing, self involved tripe for weeks now. Telling myself to keep going it will get better. But really… what has happened here. Clearly a beautiful writer but the lack of story, interesting characterisation and odd choices of dialogue are too much for me to take. I can’t read anymore, four unpleasant people whinging and wining about nothing. Hand me that Harlan Coben please

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing but maybe the title gives the clue

After Normal People, which was excellent, I found Conversations With Friends less impressive, and BWWAY even less impressive. CWF was just about readable, and I will be interested to see what the TV series (and hopefully DVD) is like. But it was a bit uninspiring, and a bit of a grind to finish it. BWWAY was a real exercise of the will to finish it, but maybe that was the point of the book! This is not the only time I have noticed this trend with an author. For me, it happened with Sarah Waters, and, to a degree, with J K Rowling. In each case, first books introduced a refreshing new concept, but further books, possibly written under time pressure to fulfil contracts to complete further titles within a limited period, were less digestible. Oh - and it didn't help that the speech marks were omitted. I found this to be an irritating gimmick, although the sense was usually clear after the first attempt at reading. At least it was nowhere as obtuse as the works of Ivy Compton-Burnett!

Just the same old wading-through-private-problems-until-the-happy-ending, just in a drier, more complicated language and with the pretense of caring about the overall problems of this world.

2.0 out of 5 stars Storyless twaddle

I liked Normal People very much but this is not in the same league. It is difficult to like any of the characters and the storyline is very thin. Some of the letters were very articulate and there were some lovely sentences, but it was so dull. Some books like The Beekeeper of Aleppo, you can't put down, but I had no trouble putting this down, in fact it was hard to pick it back up again. Soulless and stereotypical drivel.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not one for plot lovers

I found this book quite boring and difficult to read. Its the first Sally Rooney novel I've read, so wasn't prepared for the lack of punctuation/change of style, which made it hard to read at normal pace.

The story itself wasn't very enthralling, though again perhaps that's part of Rooney's charm or style.

2.0 out of 5 stars Unlikeable characters and little punctuation make this a slog

Am carrying in with it. Some of the good reviews are encouraging me but 3/4 of the way through and I honestly couldn’t care what happens. Just don’t understand the lack of punctuation. What does that achieve?

Doesn’t matter what part of the book you’re reading, you’ll feel sleepy in up to 15 minutes.
