False News in Period Petticotes!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 May 2017Verified Purchase
With only the smallest element based on reality, this film fails to convince or really engage one's emotions, in its portrayal of Jane Austen and Tom Lefroy's brief "relationship". It's shown exclusively through 21st century eyes with more than a dash of feminist revisionism thrown in for good measure in a misguided attempt to gain audience numbers which it failed to do - scarcely recouping its £16million budget. Beautifully designed and photographed though it is, the script clunks, and the uneven direction doesn't help either. Worse of all is the lack of emotional substance between the two protagonists that distances the viewer from their predicament. The writers have added so much false information to the plot, and reimagined the character of Tom Lefroy so substantially, as to make the story laughable to anyone who knows anything about the true incidents that inspired the film - little more than three short extracts from Austen's letters exists. Add to this a totally fictional coda, and a visit to Ann Radcliffe, the troubled author of such gothic novels as "The Mysteries of Udolpho", and you have a right old pseudo-literary dog's dinner. Still the cameos by Maggie Smith et al are enjoyable enough, even if the ultimate experience resembles "false news" with period petticoats, naked bathing, and trip to the local brothel thrown in to tittilate! Disappointing but watchable.

Jane Austen By Numbers: Tick the Boxes as You Watch! (And Turn the Volume Up to Max!)
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 November 2017Verified Purchase
As a pastiche Jane Austen rom-com this works OK, the production has ticked all the boxes of the formula established by the 1995 BBC Pride & Prejudice; as a drama about Jane Austen herself it doesn't convince. Good actress though she is, Anne Hathaway is too beautiful, too tall, too elegant. The rest of the cast has too little to do - top-notch actors like Julie Walters & James Cromwell (as Jane's parents-cum-Bennets Snr) & James McAvoy (as the Darcy clone) are frankly wasted. The film looks good, but another similar effort, made at about the same time for TV & starring the more convincing Olivia Williams as Jane Austen, is far far better. Incidentally, the sound quality on the film itself, but not the extra features, was so poor we had to turn the volume to maximum AND put the subtitles on!

LOVE, PASSION, FREEDOM, INNER STRENGTH, PRIDE, PREJUDICE, SOCIAL BOUNDARIES, POETRY, HEART, AFFECTION AND SELF-RESTRAINT
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 January 2012Verified Purchase
I have been truly impressed by the plot, the scenery, the characters and the acting. Totally moved by the intense and strong love story between Jane Austen and Tom Lefroy! Whenever I saw them dancing, kissing or looking into each other's eyes, I was completely enchanted by the magic created by those moments. This Blue-ray edition is fantastic, I can't really make a comparison with the dvd release, cause I own just the Blue-ray version. I only can say that the picture quality is in high definition, as well as the colours and the sound. Even if I don't really know Jane Austen much, I want to know more about her, so I'm going to read her seven novels!
The movie is well-made, and Anne Hathaway really resembles Jane Austen!
I advise you to buy Becoming Jane (ESPECIALLY IN BLUE-RAY, AS THE PRICE IS VERY CHEAP, LESS THAN 4 POUNDS!!! GREAT!!!), because this is a very good portrait of the female question, which will be much stronger in Charlotte Bronte: "to live by your pen/living by your writing"; live without depending economically by a man, even though this means giving up on love.

Not so plain Jane
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 March 2010Verified Purchase
Not being an aficionado of Jane Austen at all I watched this film with unbiased and impartial eyes. I know more about the Bronte family who a generation later came to prominence as authors. Like Anne Bronte too I learnt that Jane was the youngest daughter of a church minister. I appreciate that to people who know more about the life story of Jane Austen this film was no doubt quite inaccurate, but to someone who knew very little about her it was a very enjoyable film, especially the last hour or so when romance between Jane and Tom developed. I appreciate too that Jane,as portrayed excellently by Anne Hathaway with a very convincing middle class English accent, bore no resemblance to the 'Plain Jane' that I believe Jane Austen was. Good acting too from the likes of the late Ian Richardson,Maggie Smith and Julie Walters as relatives of the two main characters, also Anna Maxwell Martin as her tragic sister Cassandra whose fiance was killed tragically abroad. My one criticism on that score is that James McAvoy as Tom didn't have any Irish accent at all, though as he was upper class no doubt would explain that. I would say this film's storyline was partially based on Jane's novels of love, sought, found and lost. Scenery was excellent, beautiful house and lake (I enjoyed seeing Jane throw a pebble etc into the lake in one scene) and costumes and dialogue were fine to me though I know some of the dialogue was considered too modern(Jane calling her mother (Julie Walters) 'Mum' for example.) Living not that far from Bath I was of course disappointed it was not featured as her later life was not shown in this film, likewise Blaise Castle in Bristol which was named in her novel ' Northanger Abbby' as was Lawrence Weston, which is near where I live. However, this biopic is a good insight into the life of 20-year-old Jane and well worth watching and buying as it gives you some idea of her early life and failed romances. Good acting all round and just the right length to keep viewers interested. I recommend this film to fans of Austen (if they can watch it was an uncritical eye)and also people like me who knew very little about her. It reveals to us Jane before she became the literary success in the following century, though sadly she died too young to be fully aware of her success I believe. I give this 4 stars as I deducted one as I feel it portrayed her slightly inaccurately and lacked the seriousness of other adaptations.

Life doesn't imitate art
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 October 2011Verified Purchase
I ended up watching this on TV for lack of anything else on. Not that I'm averse to Jane Austens' period dramas, I'm quite addicted. However, this being more a biography, I expected it to be quite dull by comparison.
In contrast, I found this better than any of the Austen novel dramatisations, not least of all because we learn why the books are written the way they are. We even get an explanation of certain storylines as some of the situations occur to Austen herself. It is widely known that Austen never married, here we learn why. I learned that the tragedy of Miss Austens' life is that the happy endings in her books were a poor substitute for the happy ending she sacrificed for the sake of others.
This is every bit as gripping, romantic and expertly scripted as the novel dramatisations. It just doesn't have a happy ending and happens to be a true story. I found it so touching that I immediately ordered the DVD so I may watch and weep whenever I feel the need, and the book which I am immensely looking forward to.
