Product description

The cornerstone of the career-long exploration of cinematic time by director Richard Linklater, this celebrated three-part romance captures a relationship as it begins, begins again, deepens, strains, and settles over the course of almost two decades. Chronicling the love of Celine (Julie Delpy) and Jesse (Ethan Hawke), from their first meeting as idealistic twentysomethings to the disillusionment they face together in middle age, The Before Trilogy also serves as a document of a boundary-pushing and extraordinarily intimate collaboration between director and actors, as Delpy and Hawke, who co-wrote two of the films, imbue their characters with a sense of raw, lived-in experience, and as they age on-screen along with them. Attuned to the sweeping grandeur of time’s passage as well as the evanescence of individual moments, the Before films chart the progress of romantic destiny as it navigates the vicissitudes of ordinary life.   BEFORE SUNRISE An exquisitely understated ode to the thrill of romantic possibility, the inaugural instalment of The Before Trilogy opens with a chance encounter between two solitary young strangers. After they hit it off on a train bound for Vienna, the Paris university student Celine and the scrappy American tourist Jesse impulsively decide to spend a day together before he returns to the U.S. the next morning. As the pair roam the streets of the stately city, Linklater’s tenderly observant gaze captures the uncertainty and intoxication of young love, from the first awkward stirrings of attraction to the hopeful promise that Celine and Jesse make upon their inevitable parting.   BEFORE SUNSET In the breathtaking follow-up to Before Sunrise, Celine tracks down Jesse, now a newly minted author, at the tail end of his book tour in Paris, with only a few hours left before his flight back home to the States

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential film trilogy.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 November 2019
For ages The Before Trilogy was never available for Blu Ray in the UK, and was not complied into one collection outside of Before Sunrise and Sunset in one DVD package. However thanks to the Criterion Collection the trilogy is finally available on Blu Ray in one box set in the UK, which is nice considering that many Criterion releases do not get distributed outside of North America (an effort which they are slowly getting better at). What compelled me to purchase this was because of my appreciation of the films that compile this set and because of a previous Criterion Collection release of Desert Hearts. But even then I was surprised and impressed with the attention the Criterion Collection with this.

We get three brilliant films in this release:

- Before Sunrise (1995).
- Before Sunset (2004).
- Before Midnight (2013).

All three films follow the same two characters - Jesse (played by Ethan Hawk) and Céline (played by Julie Delpy). Each film has a nine year time gap in between the previous film. Before Sunrise introduces the two on that train journey where Jesse convinces Céline to come with him for a night out in Vienna. Before Sunset takes place nine years later where after the conclusion of the previous film where the two characters meet each other again in Paris. And Before Midnight takes place another nine years later where the two have already married. Each film discuss romanticism (amongst other ideologies), life and relationships, and reveal backstory through entertaining and engaging conversations between the main characters.

Before Sunrise and Before Sunset benefit from a new director supervised 2K restoration whilst Before Midnight received a new High Definition transfer. All three films and the individual settings of Vienna, Paris, and the Greek Peloponnese peninsular look fantastic, particularly the former two now that they are newly restored, but its the details and the remarkable consistency that impress the most that remain ever since the first film was released in 1995.

The directing by Richard Linklater and the fantastic chemistry between Ethan and Julie is still amazing to witness but its the input and improvisation they give to their characters that impress the most. As joint writers with Linklater, Ethan and Julie have helped create wonderfully believable characters that bounce off each other with snappy writing and dialogue. The editing is remarkable with many scenes consisting of long shots of the two characters naturally talking with each other without the actors making any mistakes or any problems on the set getting in the way. This is most evident with Before Sunset, but it remains prevalent across the three films.

Its largely opinion which film in the trilogy is the favourite amongst people. Before Sunrise has an additional supporting cast that Jesse and Céline interact with such as the Palm Reader and The Poet. Before Midnight deals with the new reality of their relationship now that they are married. But its Before Sunset that is my favourite for being the most satisfying of the three films and for being the film in the trilogy which marries editing, character development, and dialogue the most successfully. All three films do this extremely well anyway.

Additionally this set comes with additional material. This includes interviews with Richard Linklater, Ethan Hawk and Julie Delpy conducted by the Criterion Collection, behind the scenes footage, various essays and discussions by critics and scholars (including a physical booklet reflecting on the trilogy), and full length documentaries. The amount of additional material complements the trilogy and ensure there is more to watch as soon as the credits roll on Before Midnight.

In conclusion this is an essential trilogy for film lovers. The Criterion Collection have done a great job with this set. Its price is a bit steep which might put people off but I personally did not care, I got three brilliant films, a whole set of bonus features, and beautiful packaging that showed that care was put into this release. The quality put into the restoration and re-release of these three classic romantic drama films is more than enough to warrant another purchase if you already have them, and film fans who haven't watched the trilogy before can catch up on what they have missed out on. It has certainly increased my awareness of future Criterion UK releases that's for sure.

Would highly recommend to anyone.
