Whakapapa. You belong here.
Whakapapa is a Maori idea which embodies our universal human need to belong. It represents a powerful spiritual belief - that each of us is part of an unbroken and unbreakable chain of people who share a sacred identity and culture.
Owen Eastwood places this concept at the core of his methods to maximise a team's performance. In this book he reveals, for the first time, the ethos that has made him one of the most in-demand performance coaches in the world.
In Belonging, Owen weaves together insights from Homo sapiens's evolutionary story and ancestral wisdom. He shines a light on where these powerful ideas are applied around our world in high-performing settings encompassing sport, business, the arts and military.
Aspects of Owen's unique approach include: finding your identity story, defining a shared purpose, visioning future success, sharing ownership with others, understanding the 'silent dance' that plays out in groups, setting the conditions to unleash talent and converting our diversity into a competitive advantage.

In a telling passage, Eastwood compares a value-based and rule-based approach to how teams might regulate behaviour using the example of breach of behavioural standards by New Zealand and English players at the Rugby World Cup. The All Blacks approach was for the players concerned to meet with senior players and explain their behaviour. They were then told to address the team and apologise. The team itself decided on appropriate sanctions. The most severe aspect was the shame from not meeting the team's expectations of what it was to be an All Black. It was resolved within the group within 24 hours without any formal process.
In contrast, the England players were charged with a breach of the rules and called to a disciplinary meeting in London weeks later. After a formal hearing, the players were found guilty and punished. They were mobbed by the media when leaving the hearing.
Different approaches. Which feels better?

The authors Māori heritage is used as the core theme to paint the connections we have to our ancestors, the present and our descendants. From these core ideas he skilfully relates them to a diverse range of cultures and communities showing that belonging is a deeply human characteristic.
Loved it.
