5.0 out of 5 starsBeyond Order? More like Beyond Expectation!
Reviewed in Australia on 7 March 2021
I'm a psychotherapist from Regional Australia.

Beyond Order is a huge improvement over Antitode to Chaos (which was itself a brilliant book). Highly recommended. Jordan absolutely exceeded expectations here. If you're on the fence about buying it, definitely buy it.

Also if you're looking for a challenge, consider attempting to tackle his first book "Maps of Meaning". It may not be written for the layperson, but your brain will certainly thank you for the exercise!

Finally this is out so they will stop rudely bombarding me with advertisements for it. It had been months!

Big waste of time and was not worth the read. I have Psychology qualifications and read this book out of curiosity and was shocked to find there to be very little solid and varied evidence. If you are looking to read an incredibly biased opinion piece then go for it. But by all means, I would not recommend.

My copy arrived with marks on the dust-cover. Isn't this becoming a bit of a problem, Amazon? It's not the first time a book has arrived a bit worse for wear, despite being "New".

My initial response is that the 12 Rules format doesn't work as well for this volume as its predecessor. For a start, the rules are not exactly catchy or compelling as listed; e.g. "Rule I - Do not carelessly denigrate social institutions or creative achievement". Four of the rules begin with the words "Do not". I began with the "Overture" and then Rule No.1, but I was soon flaking out, confronted by a volley of JP's science jargon, so I've jumped ahead to Rule No.6, "Abandon ideology"; good stimulating, familiar Peterson hobby-horse territory. (I guess 'abandon' counts as another "Do not", right?) The so-called Overture is an introduction in which JP explains why he's written the book but also offers a lengthy account of his 2019/20 peregrinations, both in and out of consciousness, in search of medical treatment for his drug addiction and anxiety, not to mention his relatives' concurrent health calamities. Some tale of woe, but isn't this book supposed to be about my problems?

These rule books have the appearance of self-help literature but are far richer and deeper than the slim volumes typical of that popular genre. I guess this represents a sleight of hand, a recognisably populist title so as not to put anyone off what is a very substantial and weighty text.

As with the previous volume, there comes a point where Peterson is looking right at me, dear reader, like Christ looking at that thug Roman who wouldn't give Ben Hur a drink of water. I see myself in his eyes, his finger pointing to admonish me, and I am chastened. Maybe a little inspired. Last time that happened I stopped reading for several months. Obviously I'm not cured because I have bought this follow-up volume as well. I have no doubt I will learn much from it, but so far I cannot see how the rules relate to the 'Beyond Order' bit. If this were truly about what is beyond order, and is it not wildness, intuition, carnivalisation?, then one would expect the book to be more joyful and bright-minded, and not have a funereal black front cover. As I say, I felt wearied by the first Rule, and I note that both this and the similarly depressing XI ("Do not allow yourself to become resentful, deceitful, or arrogant") are the longest chapters, fifty+ pages each. Far longer than the other Rules.

There's no question the profundity of this text, its erudition and the sincere desire to motivate the reader, will enrich anyone who buys the book, but don't discount the possibility that Beyond Order represents Second Album Syndrome for everyone's favourite Youtube philosopher. More of the same, without quite the freshness of before.

Enjoy, but be prepared to dig for it.

I don’t quite understand all the positive reviews. I read and thoroughly enjoyed The 12 Rules for Life, but this book is turgidly written and lacks the verve of the first book. Peterson makes some good points in this book but you have to plough through an awful lot of verbiage to get there. Although most of the good points have been made elsewhere somewhat more cogently.
I feel that if you view Peterson as an interesting commentator on psychology you will be disappointed by this book. On the other hand if you have bought into the cult of Jordan Peterson and feel he saved your life then you’ll view this book as another missive from the mountain top.

I bet the book is superb but the delivery was the worst. Ripped and dirty, as if it was dragged on the road, tied to a horse. 0/5 delivery

Update:
I requested another book with the first to be returned. Second book arrived in almost perfect, if not perfect, condition.

It was unfortunate that the first one was bad.

OK - Peterson is obviously a clever guy, knows a lot of stuff about a lot of things. But this book is not the life fulfilling book that people say it is, it is OK at best, life-changing - certainly not. If he were sitting next to me telling the story, after about 10 pages I would be bored. I've spent money buying the book so will goddam finish it - but the messiah - he ain't.

I really wanted to love this book. I did find some very useful information in this book however I felt like he kept going off on a tangent. Not sure whether it was a book beyond my intellectual ability but I’d start reading a chapter then forget what the theme of the chapter was as he’d start talking about something unrelated. I don’t know.

There are some nuggets of wisdom in there, stuffed between a bunch of bloated and nauseating nonsense. Not akin to the revelatory nature of the first book, it’s worth a read, but there are chunks you may wish to skip past.

Oh, and by page 344, the book started falling apart.

I would only like to comment about the quality of this publisher. Only received this book yesterday and started to read today for less than a HR and pages come apart. Quality is not up to £16 that I have paid for.
