New to the Second Edition-
· Advances in the application of NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry, bioactive chemical detection and extraction, dereplication, and novel bioassay development
· New case studies and illustrations that demonstrate the practical applications of specific techniques
· A group of new contributors presenting research from their own laboratories that emphasize both the philosophy and rationale behind detection, isolation, and structural determination
Following an overview of natural product chemistry techniques and approaches, many new chapters discuss selection of source material, quantitative NMR, high speed counter-current chromatography, dereplication of extracts, and methods to determine the stereochemistry of bioactive natural products. Examinations of new technologies including LC-NMR, biosensors, and biofingerprinting accompany discussions on the search for specific activities in anticancer and antimalarial applications, seed germination stimulation, and mammalian toxicity.
With the participation from active researchers, this definitive work supplies a vital extension and an enduring contribution to the science and art of bioactive natural product detection, isolation, and structural determination.

Review
"Overall, Bioactive Natural Products, 2nd edition is a book that can be read from cover to cover for both benefit and pleasure. Thus. I highly recommend this book for active natural products scientists, not only for its quality and timeliness but also for its projection of the multidisciplinary nature of natural products research."
--Ehab A. Abourashed, Chicago State University

"This is a hefty book; not that this is a criticism. With 605 pages of relatively small print the volume contains a wealth of information...Photographs, chemical structures, schemes, flow diagrams, graphs, chromatographic spectra, formulae both mathematical and chemical, and compendial tables add to this epic work...it is certainly worthy of a place on the bookshelf, if not open (health and safety issues here?) on the laboratory bench."
--Steve Mitchell, Faculty of Medicine, Imperial College London
"As evidenced by their publishing histories, these new contributors were chosen because of their familiarity with their topics and their personal research in the areas addressed. … should in the library of every department that is involved in natural product research. Everyone who has the first edition will value this second edition equally, if not more so, as its complementary extension."
– Robert J. Krueger, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Ferris State University, Michigan in Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, Vol. 51, No. 12, 2008
"The editors did a fine job of organizing the chapters into a cohesive book . . . The main strength of the book is the combination of real-world examples. This enables natural products chemists to apply their principles outlined in the book to their own specific application . . . would be an invaluable resource for those researchers involved with natural product chemistry, and it would also be very useful for those analytical chemists involved in the characterization of botanicals."
– Mark C. Roman, President, Tampa Bay Analytical Research, Inc., in HerbalGram, Nov 2008- Jan 2009, No. 80

One gets the feeling of holding a one-volume encyclopaedia in one's hands when thumbing through the contents pages and leafing through the chapters.
There is a wealth of material presented. All the usual chromatographic and structural techniques are covered somewhere in the text. I noticed an increase in the use of Mass Spectrometry as a structural tool. There are many 'case study' type scenarios described. The diagrams are clear and the chemical structures are mostly of a uniform appearance, which makes for a professional 'look'. This could be used for an advanced teaching text in Natural Product Chemistry.
Unlike my usual approach to a book, I started reading from the back ... Steve Colegate's contribution on Plant-Associated Toxins was both gory and engaging!
I am looking forward to learning from information that was not presented in the first edition!
Recommended purchase folks!
