Jack Carr is a former Navy SEAL who led special operations teams as a Team Leader, Platoon Commander, Troop Commander and Task Unit Commander. Over his 20 years in Naval Special Warfare he transitioned from an enlisted SEAL sniper to a junior officer leading assault and sniper teams in Iraq and Afghanistan, to a platoon commander practicing counterinsurgency in the southern Philippines, to commanding a Special Operations Task Unit in the most Iranian influenced section of southern Iraq throughout the tumultuous drawdown of U.S. Forces. Carr has improved on his first 3 - no easy task - with this latest book. it takes me back to some of the early tom clancy novels where the technical detail and background really lends authenticity to the story and sucks the reader into the story - feeling like this is not just a fiction - a novel. i enjoyed every page and you will too. I realise I'm in the minority, looking at other reviews of this book (and the series as a whole) but thought I'd write this so that some other people don't think they're the only ones who don't get the appeal!
I've read all five of the James Reece books and they have sadly (IMO, of course) got more and more turgid as the series progressed. The first was great, the second was good, third and fourth were so-so and I've abandoned this one 15% through.

The problem is the politics and bizarre levels of gun-love product placement that are mini-reviews of the kit that Reece and his best buddy use. Mix this with literally dozens of pages of descriptions of how the hero feels and, despite the fact that we had a plane shot out of the sky, there is just nothing happening.

I’m sure my review is not going to make an ounce of difference to the sale of this novel. I think one is either a fan….or not. I have read all & from what I suspect, there may be another. No giveaway’s given! Only my thoughts. Once again it was a page turner for me with the main character holding forth. Very occasionally there is a gruesome bit or two but in the scheme of things quickly passed over. I have devoured all & hope beyond hope there is another book in-line. Happy reading.

I think Jack Carr is the best in the business in this genre. Uo to this point I thought his first book, The Terminal List was by far his best. This is on par with the Terminal List and possibly has a bigger cliff hanger ending!
