I have a 30-31" waist and the Medium size fitted perfectly.

The greater trochanter is that part of your femur that forms the boney prominence on the side of your hip. It is subcutaneous; that is, it sits directly beneath the skin with little to no fat or muscle overlaying it. When elderly people fall onto their side, it is the greater trochanter that is prone to fracture. Falling heavily onto concrete in the skate park is also a risk. Greater trochanter fractures are very bad news, no matter what your age.

There are 3 side-pads on each side of these shorts. When putting these shorts on, yank them up so that the waist band is above your belly button. In this way, the middle pad will sit directly over your greater trochanter on each side.

The upper rim of your pelvic bone is called the superior iliac crest. It is usually easy to feel; when you put your "hands on your hips", the length of your index finger typically is resting on the crest. With the shorts yanked up, the upper side-pad will sit directly over the crest.

In this way, these 2 prominent bones will be maximally protected, even though you might feel a bit of a dork. But hey, no-one needs to know.

I'm happy with this purchase.

I originally bought a pair of padded shorts off ebay. Total junk, itchy, baggy some places, tight others and worst of all little to no protection on my tail bone or hips. Just padded in places that didn't need it.

These on the other hand. Fit well. Comfortable. Padded well on the tail bone and hips. Highly recommended.

BTW: I read one review where a lady said she could wear these under her skinny jeans. 1/2 of me cries BS and the other half of me says I'd really like to see that for laugh. (They are bulky but not excessively.)

If you are learning a new trick or just learning to skate in a bowl/ ramp, these will save you from breaking a hip while you try new things like learning to skate in your 40's at a skate park. Better to have than hurt yourself so bad you have to miss work. You'll still feel it if you fall down hard, but you won't be bruising and breaking anything.

Nothing to really dislike about this butt protector. I stand at 165cm (5ft 5in), although they are just a little long. Have to hike them all the way up to strap my knee pads on. Like I said that’s nothing to dislike and complain about as they’ve done a great job protecting my hips, cheeks and tailbone on MANY occasions thus far. You know… old dog, new tricks = many wipeouts.
