Bony meets and conquers the battling Irish
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 August 2016Verified Purchase
Bony has moved from familiar territory to New South Wales, to investigate strange doings in the Cork Valley, an isolated spot owned and run by the Kelly's and the Conway's, where unlawful deeds are suspected. After careful planning, Bony is introduced to the Valley as Nat Bonnay, horse (and chicken) thief. As he digs up fields of potatoes (at 7/- per bag), Bony meets the various inhabitants of the place, the young Brian Kelly, his father Red (with an uncontrolled fire-cracker temper), the more rational Mike Conway and his family, and Grandma, the matriarch of the glen. How Bony fits into the community and gains their reluctant trust is skillfully developed. At the same time, how he is entranced by their charms and camaraderie, conflicting with his responsibilities as a policeman, is equally well portrayed, and it's hard not to fall under the spell of the genuine welcome and all the Irish blarney the family provides - Bony reckons it's the first time in his life there has been no colour bar, so his dilemma is plain. There are fights, illegal activities, a tragic romance, much alcohol at a festival celebrating Ned Kelly, and all of these are wonderfully described. There's a dangerous trek over high terrain in a thick fog, where you find yourself as tense as those on the treacherous paths, in love with the accompanying dogs, and full of admiration for Bony's skills in this unfamiliar territory. As is to be expected, Bony completes the duties set him by his Superintendent, but the ending of the book is a wonderful mix of responsibilities versus feelings, and how these are resolved is largely down to Bony's own character and personality. For me, this is one of the best books in the series, because, for once, Bony is absorbed into the community, made to feel welcome, and the pull he feels between duty and affection is quite explicit.

The charm of the Irish
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 May 2015Verified Purchase
Another brilliant Bony story. Our man of two races finds himself in this one bewitched by Irish charm. Bony has to solve a murder amongst an enclosed group of Irish smugglers and non conformist. People whole hero icon is the outlaw Ned Kelly. During the investigation Bony is thrilled because for once he does not feel he is being judged by his mixed race. He likes the people he is investigating and feels a certain sympathy for their attitudes, their dislike of government bureaucracy. However, he is Inspector Bonaparte and does his duty...but in his own style and brings the affair to a conclusion with his own form of justice. Very enjoyable.

Super story.

Arthur Upfield's detective once again sees below the surface of other peoples persona. There is humour and interest and an ending which surprises and delights.

Politically Incorrect Justice!

I love the language and "ethics" of Bony's adventures. I came to Arthur Upfield's writing fairly recently and am enthusiastically consuming every (reasonably priced) book I can find!
