Number one New York Times best-selling author Holly Black makes her stunning adult debut with Book of Night, a modern dark fantasy of shadowy thieves and secret societies in the vein of Ninth House and The Night Circus.
In Charlie Hall's world, shadows can be altered, for entertainment and cosmetic preferences—but also to increase power and influence. You can alter someone's feelings—and memories—but manipulating shadows has a cost, with the potential to take hours or days from your life. Your shadow holds all the parts of you that you want to keep hidden—a second self, standing just to your left, walking behind you into lit rooms.
And sometimes, it has a life of its own.
Charlie is a low-level con artist, working as a bartender while trying to distance herself from the powerful and dangerous underground world of shadow trading. She gets by doing odd jobs for her patrons and the naïve new money in her town at the edge of the Berkshires.
But when a terrible figure from her past returns, Charlie's present life is thrown into chaos and her future seems at best, unclear—and at worst, non-existent. Determined to survive, Charlie throws herself into a maelstrom of secrets and murder, setting her against a cast of doppelgangers, mercurial billionaires, shadow thieves and her own sister—all desperate to control the magic of the shadows.
With sharp angles and prose, and a sinister bent, Holly Black is a master of shadow and story stitching. Remember while you listen, light isn't playing tricks in Book of Night, the people are.

I was not disappointed! What an exciting new world and characters to get to know. This book reminded me about why I love urban fantasy. This was classic UF and I loved it.
Genre: Dark urban fantasy
The Book of Night is the adult debut of author, Holly Black who is most widely known for her bestselling YA series The Folk of the Air.
The Book of Night is richly, detailed, urban fantasy series that offers something new and fresh in a world which has been saturated with romance fantasy.
The story follows Charlie, a bartender/con-artist who takes on odd jobs for dangerous people as a means to pay the rent and her sister’s mounting bills. Various circumstances lead to her having to track down and locate a rare book which reportedly has powers which may be dangerous not just to Charlie but to the entire world.
The first part of the book is a little slow and not too much happens. During this time there is a lot of world building and establishing of how things work. I enjoyed the concept of Gloamists and for days after I was looking at my shadow in a whole new way. This was a unique concept that was different, chilling and made me want to know more.
The final third of this book is when it all comes together and where you will be glad you stuck at it. There is a twist which literally had me pulling my jaw off the floor.
I really hope that Holly Black brings us a sequel, or better yet a whole series set in this world. This was my first read by this author, but I have already downloaded The Cruel Prince and intend to read that soon.
♣️I have got to say:Charlie Hall is awesome! I loved her spirit and her many bad choices and lets face it we have all made some crappy decisions in our life but Charlie makes hers based on how she can help her sister Posey.
♣️Chasing The Liber Noctem book Charlie has to have her wits about her, something she does very well. She might make crappy decisions but this young lady is whip smart! Having no fighting skills, magic or a shadow that can do her bidding, she has to rely on these smarts to save her life. Some shadows are used to scare people but other shadows are used to kill people and can even take on their character, how can she compete with this?
And what does Vince know, if anything?
A book steeped in shadows, mystery, danger and twists to keep you careening to the ending.
THE ENDING!
= P.E.R.F.E.C.T .
I loved that the book ended this way.

Very interesting idea but the author just tries too hard to make it bleak.
Like a lot of new urban fantasy, there is a strong female lead (not a bad thing) but there is little or no humour and an ever increasing downward spiral.
I can fully understand people loving this book but it's not for me.

I loved Holly Blacks other books but I found this one took almost 100 pages to get in to but once I did it was epic!

Twists and turns that I didn't see coming, and I can only hope there is a sequel, though the book tied up fairly nicely albeit with a slight cliff hanger.
