This is a brilliant read. Clinical but written in layman's terms for anyone to grasp the impact trauma has on children - mind (brain development), body and soul (emotional). Some of the stories are very confronting to think children have suffered through that kind of abuse.
Dr Perry is a kind, compassionate man, the world needs more doctors like him.

This is a fascinating book and will be a great addition to the bookshelf for anyone interested in trauma treatment, psychology or human behaviour. While it can't avoid outlining some horrific cases of child neglect, cruelty and abuse, they are never the main focus of the book and the author concentrates on the recovery of his patients. His writing style is extremely engaging, managing to convey the severity of the cases without getting sensational and being sympathetic without becoming maudlin. He is able to explain some fairly complex brain biology and psychological theory in a way that is accessible and interesting, even to non-professionals. Reading this book changed how I thought about trauma and is altering the way I deal with the traumatised individuals in my care. It's not a self help book in the usual sense but I found it incredibly helpful. I would absolutely recommend that you buy this book.

Bruce Perry is a psychiatrist working in childhood trauma and each chapter is a different case. This gives a fascinating insight into the importance of infant attachment from birth to four years old and the impact that poor / traumatic attachments can have. If you have any interest in human development / behaviour this book is a must!

This book is compelling and has left me longing for more information on this very subject of what happens to a young child’s brain as a result of trauma, neglect, and abuse. As a direct result of reading this book I am better able to understand the potential reason for some of the traits that some looked after children display. Don’t be put off by the science; it is fascinating, compelling, and is pure insight about brain development in young children. I found myself re-reading parts of the book again, and again to fully digest them, and reading bits aloud to my partner when I found something we could relate to. I don’t think I will ever describe a child who has experienced neglect and trauma as ‘remarkably resilient’ again. Remarkable ‘yes’, but unfortunately they are not as resilient as they may first appear, and this book has provided me with a world of understanding about how I can help a child who has experienced things that I cannot imagine.
