Enjoyed it. Was good, had a few jumpy moments. Liked the twist of what if a certain superhero turned evil instead of good. Recommend it.

Great movie, but the main child lead scared the heck out of me.

Brandon's space capsule crash lands in Kansas with Brandon being only a baby. He is found and 'adopted' by a couple who store the capsule away and keep Brandon's secret. They feel Brandon is a gift, as they have been childless. But as Brandon grows he has a call to evil instead of being a saviour of mankind.
It's a nice change to have an evil superhero instead of the usual misunderstood good guy finding his way on a strange planet. And the idea works reasonably well but has a few flaws. It all feels a bit constricted as everything happens in the small town of Brightburn; never venturing into bigger cities or other countries. The characters are all a bit dull - even Brandon, who never seems to have any internal conflict about his path in life, once he finds out what that is. He has sweet Clark Kent-style parents, and a parade of waitress/police/general people for him to butcher if they upset him. There is plenty of gore, it is at times very explicit and has extended time on screen, much of which I found difficult to watch.
The film is nicely made and feels like a quality production to view, and although it's a great idea it doesn't reach the heights it could have. 3.5 stars.

They never mention it but it's basically what would happen if Superman grew up to be a psychopath. It's a good but slow moving movie. The transfer and sound are excellent.
Spoiler - not exactly a happy ending.

Good take on "Superman" if he was evil. Added to the collection.

AN ANTI-HERO EMERGES IN THE COUNTY OF BRIGHTBURN
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 October 2019Verified Purchase
With loose echos of the Superman tales -
Tori (Elizabeth Banks) and husband Kyle (David Denman) had been unable to have the child they'd wanted and believe they'd struck lucky when space-craft lands on their property, finding an infant on-board....they hide the craft in the barn and set about bringing up the child as their own calling him Brendan.
When Brendan (Jackson A Dunn) reaches his 12th birthday one or two unexplained things begin to happen.
Brendan himself begins to realise he has strange power and strength.
Tori and Kyle at first refuse to accept their 12-year-old is capable of wrongdoing, however, things begin to get out of hand, they can no longer influence Brendan's actions.
To either threaten to tell tales about him or do wrong toward him will have dire and often sinister consequences those that offend.
Not all super-hero characters are here to save the world?
Though the film doesn't quite fulfil it's potential, I myself did enjoy it, (Could indeed be a sequel yet to unfold?)
I'd say, ignore the critics, the film much better than many suggest, give it a go.

Problem child
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 October 2019Verified Purchase
A movie that mixes superhero movie style storytelling with horror, as it takes a different spin on a familiar tale.
Said familiar tale is the origin of Superman. The infant Kal-El was found by the Kents, who raised him as their son and taught him good morals and values.
So what if a child who arrived on Earth in a similar way started to go down the opposite route? Is it bad adoptive parenting to blame? Or is in his nature?
Elizabeth Banks and David Denman play a couple who find and take in a child in the above fashion. They call him Brandon. He is perfectly good. Till he turns twelve. When strange powers start to manifest, and his whole personality changes. Is the world in danger, or can his parents save the day?
This is an interesting idea but:
It doesn't quite deliver all it could.
It's not a slasher movie. Although nobody seemingly told the composer of the score, because the music is like the kind of score you would get in one of those. But it's not really anything about nature v nurture. Because it plays out very predictably, with an outcome you won't ever doubt. It's not a bad look at how parents handle problem children, but that has no bearing on the outcome either.
And as it's an origin movie, it doesn't end so much as just stop. So you might ask, without seeing what comes next, what was the point?
Do keep watching for a few seconds during the start of the end credits, because some extra scenes try to set up a sequel. The idea of which is brilliant. I would pay good money to see it. if it ever happens. But I wouldn't hold your breath for it.
So without that, an ok watch, but not one you are likely to come back to or think about for very long.
The disc has the following language and subtitle options:
Languages: English, Italian. English audio description.
Subtitles: English, Italian.
It begins with some trailers that can be skipped via the next button on the dvd remote. Same for an anti piracy ad as well. Said trailers are in the previews section of the extras.
Other extras:
filmmaker's commentary.
Nature v nurture: four mins of cast and crew eulogising the film, interspersed with clips, in a general overview of it.
Creating a new super villain. Four mins about the main character. Clips and cast and crew eulogising the idea.
Quick burns vignette social series. Cast member. Producer. Director. Doing the same as in the above. For one minute only each. These can be watched individually or all in a row.

Original release.

Really refreshing to see an original film, that isn't a remake. Or based on a book,
The film is an origin story, about a boy who was found in the wreckage of a spaceship.
And found his adoptive mother, Elizabeth Banks.
Around the age of twelve he begins to change, with super strength.
The film combines elements of super hero, mixed with horror.
Very good film, great story directing and acting.

Superhero as Horror
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 December 2019Verified Purchase
In the same way that "The Terminator" or "Predator" appear to be sci-fi films but in reality they are probably better thought of as horror, "Brightburn" appears to be a super hero origin story (Superman) but is damned scary.
Not an 18 certificate certainly...but with enough to make you walk away afterwards thinking about the implications of everything that you just saw.
Only 90 minutes long...it almost feels unfinished...and you can't help but think that the best bits are yet to come...this is an excellent film and well worth watching to remind you that the hero genre doesn't have to be all MCU.

Simple but effective.

The actors in this film are completely unknown to me but they did a good job with a moderate script and effective direction. The story is quite simple, boy crashes to Earth, a couple find him and adopt him, then, when he is about 12 he starts to do bad things.
I quite enjoyed the film, though it was quite simple in nature but well presented. I shall probably re-watch this film in about 6 months or so.
