5.0 out of 5 starsEnjoyable fast paced read Lincolnshire Detective Karen Hart and the missing girls
Reviewed in Australia on 25 April 2019
I really enjoyed this book. It had a different outcome to what I thought would happen.
The book is well written, fast paced and shows that police are human too, they have lives outside of work and make mistakes. Especially when working very long hours in the case of searching for missing children. The book is set in Lincolnshire, in the middle of England where the police have to manage a rural region of small towns and villages.
Even though I had a hunch of the abductor, there is still some un-expected twists.
I plan to read more books by this author.

3.0 out of 5 starsOverexplained and lacking restraint
Reviewed in Australia on 5 October 2021
Sorry, I could not even get to half way. Too often the characters thought, and spoke in long sentences, explaining everything several times over to each other. It felt a bit like I was reading daytime soap opera. The portrayal of police work seemed unrealistic - lacking nuance and depth - everyone seemed overly sincere. I bought based on the reviews, and feel let down. I am leaving at three stars because it may have improved over time, I just could not stay with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author and it won’t be the last. I’m the sort of reader who skips over ‘boring’ parts in books. There was no skipping over here as the entire book kept me reading, reading, reading.......

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fabulous New Series from D S Butler........

I was lucky enough to get an advance copy of this novel, and saved it for my recent holiday- it certainly was worth the wait. The new Detective Series with Karen Hart, did not disappoint. I loved it, the characters were great and the plot kept you guessing right to the end, with lots of twists and turns. Yet another great novel from D S Butler and can't wait to read Book 2 in the Karen Hart series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good crime British crime novel

Enjoyed this book, it kept my interest from beginning to end and I will certainly buy another novel from this author. I had previously read 2 American crime novels and it was good to come back to a story set in the UK. Another plus for me was that this book had just enough personal data about the various characters without getting away from the plot.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poorly written

This felt like the writing style of a children's book - short sentences, simple words, easy to follow plot with no real twists. At one point, a detective explains to another one what MO stands for, as if that would be necessary? At another point, the protagonist reflects on what "lovely sandwiches" a local pub has, for literally no reason. I kept reading out a vague curiosity about who the kidnapper would be, only for that to be underwhelming too.

This was my first book I have read by this author and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The plot was not too convoluted as some detective books can be but still kept me hooked all the way through. The characters are very believable which is vital to any novel like this. I look forward to reading the others in this series.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great page turner

This kept me interested until the last page but the last three books I've read had a high ranking FEMALE police officer as the protagonist and each story featured a lesbian somewhere. Why? At least one also featured a BME person, again why? Is this just to "tick boxes" or attract a specific reader? I'd love to know as it distracts from the excellent stories.
