5.0 out of 5 starsEnjoyable fast paced read Lincolnshire Detective Karen Hart and the missing girls
Reviewed in Australia on 25 April 2019
I really enjoyed this book. It had a different outcome to what I thought would happen.
The book is well written, fast paced and shows that police are human too, they have lives outside of work and make mistakes. Especially when working very long hours in the case of searching for missing children. The book is set in Lincolnshire, in the middle of England where the police have to manage a rural region of small towns and villages.
Even though I had a hunch of the abductor, there is still some un-expected twists.
I plan to read more books by this author.

3.0 out of 5 starsOverexplained and lacking restraint
Reviewed in Australia on 5 October 2021
Sorry, I could not even get to half way. Too often the characters thought, and spoke in long sentences, explaining everything several times over to each other. It felt a bit like I was reading daytime soap opera. The portrayal of police work seemed unrealistic - lacking nuance and depth - everyone seemed overly sincere. I bought based on the reviews, and feel let down. I am leaving at three stars because it may have improved over time, I just could not stay with it.

Not a bad read for a crime story. It is one where I could put my iPad down and maybe pick it up a couple of hours later and remember what I had previously read.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read.

(Kindle Unlimited - May 2019.) D.S. Butler is a new author to me. I found this work to be an enjoyable crime story without being an outstanding piece of fiction. Good plot, characterization and picture painting without unnecessary padding to build word length. Very well worth the read. I'll be checking out more of D.S. Butler's work.

Easy to read crime novel, that moved at a brisk pace. Would like to see more depth In the characters, but overall an enjoyable read.

This is the first in the series and from reading it it's going to be good one. Karen is a good copper and knows her job but just found her at times like a one armed bandit who just went along just with her own hunches not involving the team. Hope she learns to include her team in her hunches.

A new author to me. I started by reading about 40 pages of the 5th book in this series but then realised the set needed reading from the beginning. I found this book a little stilted at times but overall that didn't detract hugely from it bringing a gripping and interesting plot.

I've read many detective novels over the years and I class the Peter James, Roy Grace series as the gold standard. Using that scale, I would give this a bronze. Enjoyable, and I'll read the next one, but not edges of your seat, addictive reading.

This book was very easy to read with small chapters separating each event. This was good for me as I can read in small installments, for example, on a bus ride. There was an unexpected plot twist and the story flowed nicely, however, I found that there was a lot of characters to keep on track of. It might just be me being forgetful but I did need a lot of reminding. Overall, I thought this book was very enjoyable.
