5.0 out of 5 starsEnjoyable fast paced read Lincolnshire Detective Karen Hart and the missing girls
Reviewed in Australia on 25 April 2019
I really enjoyed this book. It had a different outcome to what I thought would happen.
The book is well written, fast paced and shows that police are human too, they have lives outside of work and make mistakes. Especially when working very long hours in the case of searching for missing children. The book is set in Lincolnshire, in the middle of England where the police have to manage a rural region of small towns and villages.
Even though I had a hunch of the abductor, there is still some un-expected twists.
I plan to read more books by this author.

3.0 out of 5 starsOverexplained and lacking restraint
Reviewed in Australia on 5 October 2021
Sorry, I could not even get to half way. Too often the characters thought, and spoke in long sentences, explaining everything several times over to each other. It felt a bit like I was reading daytime soap opera. The portrayal of police work seemed unrealistic - lacking nuance and depth - everyone seemed overly sincere. I bought based on the reviews, and feel let down. I am leaving at three stars because it may have improved over time, I just could not stay with it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not for me...

Did not enjoy this book, reads like a romance novel yet it seemed pitched as a detective or mystery story. Repetitive descriptions and binary characters, I found it patronising and simplistic.

3.0 out of 5 stars Average Read

An average read. I didn't really feel any sense of mystery or suspense - it was just a problem they neede to solve. Also too much conversation between characters was kind of brushed over and told in a past tense kind of way cutting the reader out from the dialogue. That writing style stopped me from being immersed in the story whoch could've otherwise been gripping.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good mystery crime thriller

This was my first book by D. S Butler that I had read. I was pleasantly surprised by how quickly I was hooked. The characters and the storyline was very realistic and believable. It was intriguing and also very current to the world we all sadly live in today. Where crimes against children and the internet and mental illness are becoming the main sources of horrific murders, rapes and child abuse and grooming gangs or individuals.

This book is brilliant at transporting you into the detectives lives of hard work, endless dead end leads, suspicion and good old intuition. Which goes into every case they are given. I recommend to every crime thriller enthusiast to buy this book. You won't be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Where have the girls gone?
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 October 2018

This is a well written book, with all the elements of mystery concerning the two missing young girls. The case gets cold, all leads are dead ends. Karen has a hunch about one family who own a large old farm, but it leads nowhere. As the story unfurls, and also involves another missing girl, who has not been found after 18 months , we wonder how it will all end.
A good story, keeping you wanting to read on and find out what will happen.

Well written Police procedural with engaging characters, easy to read entertaining but not the greatest mystery or full of surprises and twists, but always interesting. A good start to this series

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and really didn’t see the end result. A few too many characters along the way that had nothing to do with the plot, but kept me guessing which is what mystery and crime stories are all about! Well done - good work and will be recommended. Looking forward to reading another novel by this author.

A lightweight mystery written in a simple but clear way. You could actually like the main characters as they weren’t too flawed. Many DI’s these days have such deviant backgrounds that you wonder how they could become a cop in the first place. I will order the next one and see how it goes.
