Alex Verus has a magic shop in Camden, London, and an uncanny ability to see the future.
But suddenly everyone can see Alex's future. Because the Mage's Council of Great Britain just named him a traitor and ordered his death in seven days' time, and there's no way anyone can get out of that.
Alex's friends - Luna and the other apprentices he's taken in - are tainted by association. They'll be marked for death too when the ruling comes into play, and Alex becomes locked in a race against time to save them.

About the author

Benedict Jacka became a writer almost by accident, when at nineteen he sat in his school library and started a story in the back of an exercise book. Since then he's studied philosophy at Cambridge, lived in China, and worked as everything from civil servant to bouncer to teacher before returning to London to take up law.

Now his enemies have attacked not just him but also his few but loyal friends. He has just a week to save them all. But it seems there are multiple plots against him, and foiling one will not only make new enemies, but may just make the other plots more likely to succeed…

This is a tension filled novel because everything that Alex does to try and get out of his predicament seems to go wrong. He discovers that others fear him because they are making assumptions about his future relationship with Richard, his ex-master, and many think that he is already aligned with him. Alex's lack of power is not a good thing but the power of his enemies is what will bring him down. Slowly, everything that Alex held dear is destroyed from his shop to his relationship with his friends. Left with only one companion he is forced to flee and his ability to read the immediate future shows him that there may be no way out.
I was hooked on this book from the beginning. The author strips everything away from Alex and shows us how desperate he can be and what he will, and will not, do to survive. It is excellent character development yet again and the book definitely builds on the previous instalments. I highly recommend this novel and am eagerly awaiting what the author will do next - I can guarantee, from what we can see at the end of this book, that it will be even darker ! Fine by me.

So, it'd be fair to say that I've relished the series to date, and Burned is a cracker of a follow up to its predecessors. Emotion, desperation and the usual humour are all here, as well as a new rawness, particularly towards the end, that Alex needed I think, to remind him of what he has achieved and what makes him the character he is and give him opportunity for some serious development and potential power-play. After all, he has a lot of unresolved anger/fear issues that he needs to work through!
I'm guessing the start of the next book will have Alex in a very bad situation, but i'm hopeful we'll see the best of him under that sort of pressure, and the next book can't come soon enough for me.
