I was born in Kent but spent most of my working life in London and Surrey. I was an apprentice florist to Constance Spry Ltd, a prestigious Mayfair shop that throughout the Sixties and Seventies teemed with both royalty and ‘real’ celebrities. What an eye-opener for a working-class kid from the Garden of England! I swore then, probably whilst I was scrubbing the floor or making the tea, that I would have a shop of my own one day. It took until the early Eighties, but I did it. Sadly the recession wiped us out, and I embarked on a series of weird and wonderful jobs; the last one being a bookshop manager. Surrounded by books all day, getting to order whatever you liked, and being paid for it! Oh bliss!

And now I live in a village in the Lincolnshire Fens with my partner, Jacqueline, and four Springer spaniels and one little rescue, Breton spaniel. I had been writing mysteries for years but never had the time to take it seriously. Now I write full-time, and as my partner is a highly decorated retired police officer; my choice of genre is a no-brainer! I have an on-tap police and judicial consultant, who makes exceedingly good tea!

I have set my crime thrillers here in the misty fens because I sincerely love the remoteness and airy beauty of the marshlands. This area is steeped in superstitions and lends itself so well to murder!

I am lucky enough to be one of the amazing Joffe Books team of authors and am really enjoying being able to spend time doing what I love... writing!

I really struggled with this novel, the 6th in the Nikki Galena series, which was quite perplexing as I normally hang on every word the author writes and I'm totally mesmerised with her characters Nikki and her partner Joseph.
Maybe it was because I was coming out of a reading slump and I see it took me nearly a month to read this, so I'm thinking it was more than likely that I was having a hard time connecting and feeling invested in the main characters this time. However, by halfway through the novel Nikki and her team became far more animated, the story flew by and I was riveted to the action both criminal and personal.
Fluid and well written as always, the story had a few subplots that were woven seamlessly into the main plot ensuring an exciting revelatory conclusion . I feel the author has set in process a big upheaval in the future of the series with Tamsin and Niall's engagement and the possibility of a marked change in Nikki's and Joseph's friend based relationship, with the arrival of his ex-wife on the scene. It should make for a very exciting start to the next book in the series! (which you know I have already downloaded. 😜)

It is a pleasure to read well constructed books and Joy has not failed to deliver. DI Nikki Galena and DS Joe Easter investigate the killing of a young girl who is found in a barn with a finger cut off. There are similarities to an unsolved murder in Derbyshire and then a girl with similar injuries escapes. At the same time an old enemy and villain Freddie Carved is seen around their patch. The team undertakes their usual thorough police work as the dots start to join. They joined with Derbyshire and DS Ben Radley in particular. So the private lives and loves also continue with Nikki and Joe still wondering while others come together.

Joy manages the various stories and keeps the interest. She is a very good writer and there are plenty of twists and surprises. This is a good read.

When I discovered a 'new-to-me' detective series, I 'binge read' the first four books about Niki Galena and her team, and felt bereft to reach the end. Luckily Joy Ellis published number five and I settled down happily to renew my acquaintance with this great detective story. I particularly enjoy the setting as I live in East Anglia and can relate to the lonely fen, big skies and oft-times haunting landscape. Imagine my delight when I discovered Joy's latest offering "Captive on the Fens". Again, as with the other books, the writing is superb, the story well paced and gripping, and the characters utterly believable. I enjoy the fact that there is just sufficient 'back story" to each character to make them well rounded, without those stories hold up the narrative, as in so many other in this genre.
The plot has been described elsewhere, I'll just say that there are many twists and turns in the story and a couple of great conclusions, but just enough unfinished threads to ensure that there will be (At least!) another book in the series. Key to the success, in my opinion, is the relationship between Niki and Joseph; we'd all love a romantic resolution in one way, but perhaps this wouldn't work in the best interests of the characters or the series! Who knows? Only Joy Ellis!

Thanks to Kindle Unlimited I am making my way through the series. This time, a young woman is found murdered in a remote country barn. One of her fingers has been cut off. Nikki and her team endeavour to prevent any repeat murders in an intriguing plot.

I've read quite a few of the Nikki Galena books now and I'm increasingly irritated by the characters - Saint Nikki, Holy Joe and the rest of the "team' who seem to be without any flaws, either personal or professional. Even one new addition who blots his copybook is not only quickly moved on by Galena, he also has a sad back story which we are supposed to sympathise with as a reason for his poor attitude.
In the first book, Nikki is very unpopular with her colleagues because she has allowed personal tragedy to influence her work but she (miraculously?) reforms to become the perfect boss and detective, loved and respected by all.
There is a group of old-fashioned villains operating in the area who cooperate somewhat with Nikki as they're shown as a better class of criminal than the drug barons, people traffickers etc, the team are constantly hunting and they trust her to some (unbelievable) extent.
Some of the dialogue can be stilted and the characters stereotyped. I really don't think that I'll be reading any more. Crime fiction is, by its very nature, far-fetched but there needs to be some credibility to make it successful. I'm disappointed as some of the plots are interesting but I really can't be doing with the lack of any of the natural day-to-day tension that happens when any group of people work together in a stressful job.

They have all been captivating page turnovers that will make you want to get to the end but not wanting it to finish. So brilliantly well written I can not put into words but feel sad now as to what will I read next and how long will it be before the next one. You get to know and love all the team especially the no doubt extremely handsome Joseph Easter, the brilliant Yvonne and Naill and Dave. I can't wait to see what happens between Cat and Ben and love Rorys whit. I'll miss reading these books as they have claimed my every free moment. Thank you for writing such amazing stories

Like the first five, this didn't disappoint. Although the stand alone story was gripping and intense from page one, the central characters lives move on in a story of their own. This storyline was well written and lots of twists and turns, keeps the reader hanging on to every word, wanting more, i read this one very quickly, couldn't put it down. Can't wait to get into book 7. Hold on to your hat!!
