This guidebook describes the Camino del Norte and Camino Primitivo pilgrim routes to Santiago de Compostela in northwest Spain. The 820km Camino del Norte follows the coast from Irún, on the French border, through Bilbao and takes about 5 weeks to complete. The 355km Camino Primitivo splits off from the Camino del Norte near Villaviciosa and passes through Oviedo and Lugo en route to Compostela. It takes roughly 2 weeks to walk. This book also includes an overview of a continuation route from Santiago to Finisterre on the coast. Physically demanding, but not difficult, the caminos are best walked from late spring to autumn.

The guidebook is broken into stages of between 15 and 35km, most of which end in a town or village with a pilgrim albergue. There is indispensable information on facilities, food and lodging, 1:100,000 scale maps of the route and town maps for key locations. With notes on preparation and planning, travel and equipment, a list of useful sources of information, and a glossary, the book provides all you need to know to walk the camino.

Santiago de Compostela, whose cathedral houses the relics of St James, was one of three major centres of Catholic pilgrimage in the Middle Ages. In modern times the Caminos de Santiago have seen a resurgence in popularity, drawing walkers for all sorts of reasons. Passing through the Spanish regions of the Basque Country, Cantabria, Asturias, and Galicia, the northern caminos are popular enough to offer sufficient facilities, clear routes, and a community of pilgrims, without suffering the overcrowding of the Camino Frances.

First and foremost, I'm a high school teacher from Portland, Oregon, USA.

I also walk a lot. My first pilgrimage on Spain's Camino de Santiago took place in May 2002; in the years since, I've rarely had a year pass without another long-distance walk. After leading a couple of student groups on the Camino del Norte and Primitivo, my co-leader and I realized we had a lot of good information to share on those routes, at a time when no English-language guide existed. Before we knew it, we were guidebook authors, and we're very pleased with the newest editions of these guides, published by Cicerone in 2018.

Bought this for use in summer 2019 - nearly all info was accurate at that time. I would recommend using in conjunction with gronze dot com which will give some additional hostel info. If you want to avoid the over crowding then the stages in this book put you out of sync with the crowded gronze stages which 80% of people I met seemed to be following. I found some legs in the middle were a little long and the very last leg extra long. So didn’t stick to it exactly. I would recommend to plan for an extra 2-3 nights than the guide suggests. Was invaluable on my walk as allowed me to switch off the phone. Had plenty of detail route wise - there have been a few changes to the route where locals have redirected pilgrims away from private land. I didn’t plan my route in advance - just took it day by day, and this book really saved me on a few occasions as had accommodation that others didn’t know about. Watch out for festivals in major towns if going in summer. Some of the best places I stayed were actually between the stages in the book so follow what interests you - there is plenty to inspire you in this little book and lots of pictures ! It’s a great size to stuff in a side pocket of your backpack for easy access. It was still in good condition by the end of the trip and I will use again when retiring to do the primitivo.
