5.0 out of 5 starsThe single most useful book I've ever read.
Reviewed in Australia on 17 December 2018
That's a big statement, I know, but David Goggins has such a unique, refreshing, and honest way of looking at things that unless you're intellectually and emotionally comatose (or would like to be), you can't help but grow as you read. After decades of conscious self-discovery I thought I knew myself well. Goggins showed me how I only knew the areas I wanted to know, and how the unexamined areas had been mud wrestling me behind the scenes for years. I'm going to come right out and say the one thing I never expected to say in a review: If in your life you're only going to read one book that will mess you up and set you right, you can't get better than this one.

1.0 out of 5 starsLooks like a fake copy
Reviewed in Australia on 14 April 2021
The quality of the print is terrible. It looks like a fake copy. I have compared my copy to the ones at the stores and its different. The ones at the store have much better printing and better quality paper. Avoid this version as it ruins the experience of this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW, What a man and what a book!

Honestly loved this book and found it truly inspiring.
The way it is written and his story is amazing.
Well thought out, and a lot more realistic than I expected - when I first heard of Goggins, I thought omg this guy is straight up wired differently and has something wrong with him, but he truly mastered the art of using his mind to overcome so much and provides guidance on how we can all improve ourselves, become stronger and more mentally tough.

A great read. It's not just about how he struggled and then achieved his dreams. It's how he continues to struggle and work hard till this day and will in the future. It's well written and would recommend.

Very well written, powerful story with a unique character and attitude, which you can feel very strongly as you read about David's journey. I agree 99% with David, especially his view that "The ticket to victory often comes down to bringing your very best when you feel your worst" (Page 59). I am truly amazed and fascinated with David’s journey and he is no doubt an inspirational individual that everyone can learn from a great deal.

However, having said that there is one boxing example in the book, I strongly disagree with on (Page 211-212): “Imagine you’re a boxer, and on your first day in the ring you take one on your chin. It’s gonna hurt like f*****g hell, but at year ten of being a boxer, you won’t be stopped by one punch. You’ll be able to absorb twelve rounds of getting beat the f**k down and come back the very next day and fight again. It’s not that the punch has lost power. Your opponents will be even stronger. The change has happened within your brain. You’ve calloused your mind. Over a period of time, your tolerance for mental and physical suffering will have expanded because your software will have learned that you can take a hell of a lot more than one punch."

The problem with this particular example is that there have already been multiple rigorous scientific brain scan studies done investigating the long-term accumulative brain damage from constant concussions sustained over a period of time, especially in boxing. Therefore, continuous punches to the head after 10 years could very likely lead to or significantly increase the risk of serious irreversible consequences such as confusion, headaches, memory loss, social instability, impulsive behavior, dementia, movement disorders, speech impediments, tremors, cognitive disorders and depression. David talks a great deal about his injuries (broken skin & bones, heart surgery) and his incredible ability to be able to persevere with his enormous will power. However, there is a huge difference between braking your skin & bones, which eventually will heal compared to sustaining long-term brain damage, which is simply irreversible! and no amount of will power can regenerate it back to the way it was. Just read about these boxing legends who developed debilitating brain diseases as a direct result of the constant concussions sustained over their boxing career:
1. Sugar Ray Robinson (Developed Alzheimer’s disease)
2. Muhammad Ali (Developed Parkinson’s disease)
3. Jerry Quarry (Developed brain atrophy & dementia)
4. Freddie Roach (Developed Parkinson’s disease)
5. Michael Watson (Sustained serious brain injury, confined to a wheelchair)
6. Meldrick Taylor (Developed dementia)
7. Thomas Hearns (Developed dementia)
8. Riddick Bowe (Sustained brain damage)
9. The list goes on….

My recommendation would be to ignore the ignorant boxing example, because the rest of the book is fantastic and truly inspiring.

3.0 out of 5 stars Spoilt by Excessive Profanities.

First off. Well done to the Author David Goggin for his remarkable achievements.
The first 4 chapters often left me having to re read parts to follow the story line and at one point thought I would not continue reading . It seemed very mixed up and no continuity. But I did and I'm glad I did. Many times I came across those occasions when you stop and ponder what has been written. And I mean that in a good way.
The downside for me, hence my star rating was what I regarded as unnecessary, was the extensive use of profanities.
Perhaps a foul language warning should be noted in the description.
Since buying this book, I found out you can get it in what is regarded as a 'Clean Edition' and thus no profanities.
But again. Well done to the Author for his achievements.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a book!!

Well, I'd listened to David Goggins and loved his mindset, it was brutally honest and resonated with me. When I realised he'd written a book I couldn't wait to get into it and he didn't disappoint.
I. Could. Not. Put. This. Down.
I read it in a week. Incredible insight into what you're capable of, not just another motivational speaker. Pain, humiliation, and extreme challenge in spades. DG put himself to the test over and over, the mindset shifts are phenomenal, the realisations life changing. Recommend to everyone!! P.s. yes he swears. I don't think he'd be able to relay the brutal reality the way he does with mild language.
