4.0 out of 5 starsMagnificent exposition of survivorship: superficial on the relationship

Yet another step in my Enoch Arden marathon. Unlike the other components, this film devotes a great deal of time to the survivorship, which it does magnificently. Bravura performance from Hanks and thoroughly credible and gripping exposition of the intelligence and bravery needed to survive on a desert island.
Alas, the coverage of the psychological issue of his wife having remarried is superficial. It's a long film and I wouldn't want much of the survivorship section cut, but I think the producers could and should have added another ½h or so to dig deeper into the marital situation.
I wouldn't have minded a little less overt publicity for FedEx. The product placement was a little over-the-top.
Not that this affected my rating, but the soundtrack on my DVD cut out after 1½h and I had to watch the final hour with close captioning. Return and replace in hand.
5.0 out of 5 starsProbably Tom Hanks most ambitioius role. He had to lose 50 pounds during a two-year hiatus.

A real, beautifiul island somewhere in the South Pacific. Tom Hanks, as Chuck Noland, manages to survive using only his wits and the materials he finds on the islan. His 'love affair' with the volley ball 'Wilson,' is especially touching. The viewer gets a brief chance to learn that Noland was an excellent sailor, a skill he put to use by buidling a raft witih which he escaped from the island. And Hellen Hunt, as Kelly Freers, Noland's girlfriend, plays an important role at the beginning and end of the film. Of the forty or so DVDs in my collection, this one is my favorite!
What would you do to survive? How inventive could you be if you were faced with being stranded on a remote pacific island no one even knows exists? I am a huge Tom Hanks fan, not to the point of overlooking some of his flops, but this movie is one of the finest pieces of work he has put out to date. Fantastic scenery, script so believable it is almost alarming. The message it conveys comes across on so many levels that the viewer cannot help but be moved by it. Time is precious, but how precious when compared with everything else you value and love in life. Finely crafted movie, excuse the pun, time-less in its essence.

This movie seems so real, you forget that it is fiction. Tom Hanks plays a very convincing, rich dramatic role as a man shipwrecked on an island in the S. Pacific. The changes that come over him psychologically in the 4 years there are amazing. The ending is enigmatic and totally memorable. It makes an altogether terrific story.
