Leaving her tiny English village for the bright lights of London, Odeline Milk is finally going to make her dream a reality: to establish herself as a mime artist. She certainly wears the clothes for it: white collarless shirt, waistcoat, baggy black trousers, walking stick and bow tie have long been her uniform. She’s an unusual young woman.
With the inheritance left by her mother, Odeline buys her own little patch of London: an old houseboat on the canal. What she doesn’t know yet is that for some the city’s canals have an appeal of their own. They are below the eyeline, a sort of halfworld, a good place to hide for a community of curious outsiders, all with their own stories to tell - stories that might help a certain young lady to think differently about life.
As Odeline becomes enmeshed in her new community, her naivety starts to ebb away; the first thing she learns is that she doesn’t know much about life at all.
Mave Fellowes has an MA in Creative and Life Writing. Many days spent watching the water finally inspired her to write her first book, Chaplin and Company, set on and around the London waterways. Prior to this, she had several pieces of work published in Granta and various other publications.

And then there is Odeline's houseboat: 'Chaplin and Company' which is almost another character in itself, with its own story to tell, and this story is gradually and interestingly revealed to us as we travel along with Odeline on her journey. And this story is not just a journey for Odeline, but for the reader too, as the author talks to us in such an inviting tone, regularly including her readers as she encourages us to join Odeline in her adventures: "Come down over the west of the city, come closer down, and closer still, until you can see the canal... Now the towpath widens. Go past the dark green barge with a wide double doorway..." I could continue, but I won't as it's so much better if you read it for yourself - however I will just say that I very much enjoyed this aspect of Mave Fellowes' writing style as it drew me right into her story.
This is a very engaging and beautifully written novel with some wonderful descriptions of situation and setting and I found this a fresh, quirky, and very entertaining read, which I galloped through in practically one very enjoyable sitting. I could just mention that perhaps the author has tried to include maybe a little too much in her debut novel, but as it all makes for such enjoyable reading, it's really not a problem. So, if you are looking for a novel that is a little bit different, but one that is not too weird or too heavy, then 'Chaplin and Company' could be just what you are looking for.
4 Stars.

Chaplin & Company did not disappoint and was indeed a very engaging read. The author’s narrative of the characters’ surroundings and personality is so vivid and engrossing that it almost felt as if I was observing them first hand and that’s a lovely gift to give to the reader.
From the outset I was hooked on the many stories within the story – I was fascinated and curious about the myriad of characters the author has created to the point that I was left feeling that they deserve a book of their own. The appeal of these “side characters” was quite fortunate because it took me almost to the end of the book to warm up to Odeline herself. But warm to her I did, mainly because in the end, not even Odeline, with her oddness, insensitiveness and single-minded determination to insulate herself, was able to resist the allure and rewards of connecting on a very human level.

Hope there will be a sequal to finish the tale.it
