About the author

A warm welcome to my author page! Thank you for visiting.
I live in Scarborough on the stunning North Yorkshire Coast in the UK. My home inspired the creation of the fictional seaside town of Whitsborough Bay where I set some of my books. The Hedgehog Hollow series takes readers to a gorgeous countryside setting on the Yorkshire Wolds.
I live with my husband, our teenage daughter and sprocker spaniel, Ella. I'm a stationery addict with a notepad obsession who loves chocolate (although it doesn't love me), hedgehogs, 80s music, collectible teddy bears and lighthouses.
My career has mainly been in HR as a trainer and recruiter. I had a brief detour into retail to set up and manage my own specialist teddy bear shop and started writing my debut novel on quiet days in the shop.
In June 2020, I became a full-time author. I'm so very grateful to anyone who has bought or borrowed my books in whatever format, helping me fulfil a long-held dream of writing full-time. I still can't believe I get to spend every day chatting to my fictional friends and making stuff up.

As regards any form of romance alongside this though, the first 50% is quite the opposite as it deals almost entirely with her manipulative and unsupportive boyfriend and how useless he is to her. The next 30% throws in a secondary story about Charlee's origins and family, which, since she was purportedly quite indifferent to them, fills up a load of pages but doesn't add anything to the romance.
Interwoven with these themes, there is a spark of romance with unobtainable Matt but this is only really developed in the last 20% of the book and is treated in such a way that, whilst there is the required HEA ending, it is all rather brief and not very satisfying to read about.
Overall, writing quality around 4.5 stars but FOR ROMANCE JUST 1.3 STARS, giving an overall score of 2.9 stars, rounded up to 3 stars. Sadly, since I bought it for the romance I shall be deleting it so I don't have to go through all the grot to get to the small amount of nice stuff. What a disappointment!

The story is told in first person by Charlee and covers two Christmases that couldn’t be more different and basically skips everything in between. Both parts of the stories are very likely to make you get tears in your eyes, or really sob, but for different reasons. I literally cried and smiled a lot while reading this book!
What to expect:
✅ a very sweet (although sometimes too sweet) and good hearted main character Charlee
✅ the sweetest grandparents, who unfortunately pass away before the story starts, but their impact on Charlee are felt throughout the story
✅ a wonderful best friend, Jodie
✅ new friends and a heartwarming community
✅ picture perfect setting… I love Castle Street!
✅ a villain (bad boyfriend) and a prince charming… so obviously some romance
✅ family troubles and heartbreaking loneliness… you will need tissues!
✅ Chocolate and lots of it! I dare you not to read this book without wanting to eat and/or drink chocolate!

I'm a big fan of her work and, as always, it’s beautifully written with a natural warmth and humour that just seems part of her style.
Her heroine Charlee is both strong and at times vulnerable while her hero, Matt, is absolutely perfect – apart from having a fiancee, of course.
Not only are her main characters always really well developed but the supporting cast also add colour and excitement. If you've read any of her other books you'll be pleased to see some familiar faces pop up.
There are some wonderful, really did not see that coming, surprises in this book, which must have taken a lot of planning but it all comes together like a perfect jigsaw.
There are also some truly gorgeous scenes, including one involving a Christmas light switch on (I won’t spoil anything) that had me swooning.
A warning though; I wanted to eat a bit of chocolate – specifically Christmas chocolate - approximately every other page.
If you have no will power, like me, I’d stock up before you start so you don’t have to interrupt the story to pop to the shops.

When we first meet Charlee, the heroine of this story, she's at a low ebb, having recently lost her beloved nanna - the woman who raised her after her mother left her. Charlee has inherited Nanna's house, but she feels uncomfortable living there, especially with amorous boyfriend Darren. Darren's got a new job, and is heading off to Whitsborough Bay, and he wants Charlee to sell up and come with him. But Charlee has her best friend, Jodie, to think about, and her job working with master chocolatier Pierre.
As events take an unexpected turn, Charlee finds herself heading to Whitsborough Bay after all, and is soon on the hunt for premises. Because Charlee has decided to open her own chocolate shop, and she soon finds the perfect location - Castle Street, home of many of the little businesses readers of Jessica Redland's previous books will already have become acquainted with, such as Flowers and Gifts, Bear with Me and Carly's Cupcakes.
As Charlee settles in to her new life, she throws herself into preparing her chocolate shop, ready for business, and tries not to dwell on the fact that Darren is about as useful as a chocolate teapot. When a catastrophe occurs, it's lucky for Charlee that Matt the plumber is on hand to rescue her. Not that Charlee's interested in him. Of course not. She's happy with Darren. Isn't she?
Suffice it to say, Christmas for Charlee that year is hardly something to celebrate, despite her new home and new business. Charlee can hardly imagine being happy again.
As Christmas comes around again, the following year, can Charlee make it the time when all her dreams finally come true, or will it be another lonely Christmas?
This is a lovely story of two Christmases, and what can happen in one year. It's a tale of friendship, love, and hope. With a subplot involving Charlee's errant mother, and the truth about her birth and childhood, it's also more than just a frothy seasonal story.
Sometimes, we don't realise who really matters to us, even when the truth is sitting right in front of our eyes, and this story reminds us that families come in all different shapes and sizes, but it's the love at the core of them that makes them real, not blood or birth certificates.
As the year comes to a close, Charlee discovers that she's not so alone, after all, and she never has been ...
This is a really gorgeous festive novel, full of Christmas spirit and lots of chocolate. You will get hungry though. The chocolate is so well described and the images the author creates are enough to make your mouth water. If you're on a diet, you may need to save some extra calories for when you read this!
