Whilst still being visually stunning and life affirming the longer version definitely seemed to have more contrasts than I remember. There were many more ribald, absurd and amusing moments than in the original and more dark moments too, which went a long way toward removing the cloying sentimentality from the shorter film. The music is perfectly integrated - apparently the film was made to the score rather than in the usual way - and is Morricone at his most lyrical and conventional.
This was a great buy. It was marvellous to see the directors original intentions and hear Morricone's full score. Recommended.

There are two versions of the film in this package. I have only watched the standard version so far, but it was intriguing enough to make me plan to watch the extended ‘director’s’ cut version which has a far better image quality and is also 50 minutes longer!
