5.0 out of 5 stars40 years of sadness 😔
Reviewed in Australia on 19 April 2022
This book kept me hooked, finding out what happened to you a young women 40 years earlier was not going to be easy but with the right people and new technologies now available will Tracy find the truth and finally give peace to the family? I loved how all the pieces fit together. So many lives were effected by this tragedy, lies and secrets.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another great read from Mr. Dugoni.

Mr. Dugoni continues his engrossing and well written series of Detective Tracy Crosswhite books in this novel where she is simultaneously investigating the murder of a husband and a cold case for a law enforcement colleague in a township a couple of hours away. Captain Nolasco's animosity, thankfully, is almost nonexistent in the book. Highly recommended.

Tracey Crosswhite is trying to solve the murder of a husband, shot in his old home as he was picking up his son. His wife has confessed to the murder and so has his son. Only one of them is guilty it's up to Tracey and her team to unravel the evidence and find the guilty party. An old friend has contacted her about a cold case of a young girl who died 40 years ago it was ruled a suicide but why would the sheriff who died have the file in his home?

I really enjoyed the 3rd book in this series. Another cold case all but forgotten except for the family of the teenager who appeared to have committed suicide. How far will a parent go?

What a let down after the first two, brilliant Tracey Crosswhite books. I was so looking forward to reading this, but it just didn’t suck me in like the others. I was looking for electrifying action, thrilling pace, twists and turns, and instead got a run-of-the-mill, plodding police procedural with no pizazz whatsoever.

Dugoni’s mistake was trying to run two cases in tandem: one current and one cold. The aim was to show how solving one could trigger insight into the other. Fair enough, but there was a huge imbalance in their treatment. So much so that the recent murder actually seemed an irrelevance, a distraction even from the main narrative.

The real meat was in the reopening of a 20 year-old case involving the suicide of a young Native American woman. Fresh evidence has come to light and Tracey suspects a coverup for murder. While the mechanics of the investigation, in particular the forensics, are detailed and compelling, the actual rolling out of the plot is just plain dull. The story had great possibilities, but there were too many diversions and an inordinate number of characters who simply had no business being there.

Up until I read this book, I considered Tracey Crosswhite to be a brilliant detective heroine. Her back story - leaving teaching to join the police following the murder of her sister - gives her great motive and integrity. But Dugoni really missed an opportunity here to further develop the personal side of Tracey. I think most readers favor well-rounded characters with recognizable human emotions, foibles, strengths and weaknesses, but sadly Tracey hasn’t evolved at all from the person she was in the last book. For example, it would have been nice to explore more her relationship with boyfriend Dan, but he pretty much popped in at the beginning and the end, and that was it. He might as well not have been mentioned at all.

All in all, I think Dugoni dropped the ball big time with this one. I hope he picks it up again for Detective Crosswhite’s next big case.

Thanks for reading my review. I hope you found it helpful. You can find more candid book reviews on my profile page.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great crime novel from Robert Dugoni with two separate story lines for you to enjoy.

I really enjoy these Tracy Crosswhite crime stories by Robert Dugoni, especially as one can read them as 'stand alone' novels. 'In the Clearing' has a terrific plot; we follow Tracy Crosswhite & her colleagues as they investigate two crimes, one of which occurred 40 years ago. I hadn't expected two separate story lines from reading the description about the book on Amazon, but as far as I am concerned, this was a bonus ... two separate story lines, running concurrently through the novel, all for the price of one.
I particularly enjoyed the 'cold case' story-line. I won't spoil your enjoyment by revealing too much about the plot but Robert Dugoni's style of writing is so effective that as I read it I found myself reminiscing about my high school days in Canada in the late 1960s (even though this story is set in northern USA and the mid 1970s)! The cold case story features more prominently in the book than the case set in the modern day and I think the book is the better for this. I found the cold case far more interesting to follow as Tracy Crosswhite and her colleagues use current developments in forensic science to uncover new evidence that would not have been available forty years earlier. The only (minor) criticism I would have is the convenience of having so much evidence available to work with 40 years on. The second case takes a different angle as Tracy and her colleagues attempt to discover if the person who has admitted to a murder actually committed it or if they were covering up for the actions of someone else. Sorry, but you'll have to read the story to find out.
So overall, another terrific book from Robert Dugoni that I hope you will find as enjoyable to read as I did.

4.0 out of 5 stars Different feel to this book...

Overall excellent writing as always & fascinating plot with interesting twists... There was a different feel to this than previous books, possibly due to the nature of Tracy's investigation into a cold case & how she had to handle it pretty much by herself...
I felt the pacing of the book fell a bit flat in the middle & I had to force myself to keep on reading as I knew the payoff would be worth it...
A bittersweet, moving ending & good premise for future books... On we go to the next one!

This is the third book in the series, unlike the previous two, this largely concerned a 'cold case' from over twenty years ago and Tracey's investigation into it, which was done on an 'unofficial' basis. There was a current case running at the same time which she largey left to her partner, Kins. To me, the current case was the more exciting of the two story lines and i wish that story was developed more. Nonetheless a good read, but maybe not as exciting as book number 2.

This is the 3rd book in the Tracy Crosswhite series, I have enjoyed reading them all so far. There was a lot more CSI in this book but with cold cases guess that’s the way it has to be. I am enjoying the relationships that are developing and look forward to reading the next book.

Tracy has not one but two cases to solve. One is currant day and the other is 40 years old.
Taking time owing she goes off to investigate the cold case using all the information left for her from her friends dead father. This turns out to be a really said story.
Bits from this case help her with the new case where a mother and son both admit to killing the same person, her husband/his father.
Great writing
