Cobalt Blue has a good premise. A kinda-Cold War Superhero vibe where USA and Russia both have an indestructible super! Or are they? Chris Cobalt, the US super, dies as old age catches up with her, leaving America at the mercy of the Fury of Russia, the Russian super!
The story races through the Fury seeking out each one of Cobalt's kids, who all possess super qualities, just not as fantastic as their mother's. Until he meets the last one, who has remained in hiding all of her life, for this very scenario.
The pace in the story is typically fast and it's very easy to flip through the pages. Unfortunately, the characters are all too cardboard cutout and the story a little too formulaic. It surprised me since Reilly is now such an experienced author. I do wonder if a first time author wrote this whether they would find a publisher wiling to publish it.
It's not Reilly's best work. Far from it but it still has many of the qualities that we have come to love in his stories: the frantic pace, the 'hugeness' of the scenarios, world domination, lots of action, etc.
I could not put this down, read in one day. As always, fast paced and action packed.
I really liked all of the characters and climactic ending. Thank you Matthew, you did it again.!
Cannot wait for the next book.!
Read it in one sitting couldn’t put it down!!!

Yes, it's short...a novella and I totally did not expect that. I thought it was a full novel. I was a little disappointed how short it was only because I knew I'd finish it much quicker than usual. Did that make it any less entertaining? Absolutely NOT.
This is the first superhero story from my favorite super author...and I am fervently hoping this isn't the last we've heard of Cobalt Blue. As usual, Matthew takes very little time forcing the rubber to hit the pavement right quick. He masterfully sets the stage for how the main characters become "super" and shows us that once again, the action is going to be fairly constant and exciting from beginning to end. Reilly manages quite a bit of character development despite the story's short length and while he doesn't bore us with crazy and unnecessary character development that many famous authors like to dwell on that really do not move a story forward 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩𝙨𝙤𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧. I'm not knocking those authors, I'm just saying there really is such a thing as too much. I'll argue with anyone whether or not that truly adds to a story's depth and overall enjoyment of a novel.
***Mini Spoilers Ahead***
Okay...I digress. Reilly introduces 2 initial superheros. Cobalt and Red Fury. One for the United States and one for Russia. One chooses to be a true hero, and one uses their newfound powers in order to dominate, enslave and rule over all. The only thing keeping the world relatively safe from the wanton destruction and total enslavement of pretty much all is the fact that Cobalt and Red Fury's powers are absolutely equal. Mutual Assured Destruction, folks. It works, too.
But then Cobalt passes away and suddenly, and catastrophically, Red Fury stands alone as the supreme super power without peer...and he wastes no time proving that to the West following Cobalt's demise. Along the way are some genuinely fun and exciting developments - none of which I will spoil for you here. I've already done enough without spoiling too much (at least I haven't done much). Switching between one color of type to another as you read will make sense to you pretty quick, so don't worry about that.
What we have here is another story told with finesse and creativity that ought to satisfy almost all fans of superheros and most Reilly fans for the non-stop action from beginning to end. I also enjoyed the ending and how Matthew leaves us with wanting more (he's naturally gifted at that, isn't he?). Another Rip-Roaring Read if you ask me and 𝙖𝙗𝙨𝙤𝙡𝙪𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙮 worth every penny - and then some. My only complaint is I wished the story was longer. Kudos Matthew, I love your stuff and always have since reading Ice Station back in 1998 (I believe). Keep up the good work.

As much as I like Matt Reilly , I have read every single one of his books, I feel this was a rushed work, an in between book .
The characters were flat and formulaic, even though the premise was good his bad guys were needlessly bad and incomprehensible popular , the good guys were mostly schetches and every single chapter had a .paint by numbers quality to if.
I give it 4 stars because the notion was good and I am a sucker for Matt Reilly .
