I wanted something that we both remembered that would last for more than a few minutes and also be watchable by everyone; not something that can be said of most modern productions which are either silly or violent or gruesome or contain foul language.
There are about 89 episodes if I remember correctly and we are about halfway through them as I write this.
Most episodes are very good although a couple were (inexplicably) quite 'silly' as if being played for laughs; fortunately this is not the case with the vast majority.
Whilst James Herriot did not exist, nor did the Farnans or Darraby, and the stories are set a few years earlier than the writers experiences (upon which these are based), it doesn't diminish the enjoyable and nostalgic feel of the series at all.
One slightly annoying feature is the stream of credits at the start of each disc and the constant badgering about not copying etc. ; anyone who buys the discs legitimately like myself, wouldn't copy them and anyone who was criminally inclined wouldn't care about the warnings, so they are just annoying.
Other than that, this set is very good and well worth the money.

Many memories of my childhood Sunday evenings when it was 'approved' viewing, more memories because when I grew up I loved Yorkshire and went there to see the Dales for myself.
In the era of the kind of technology that Noel Fitzpatrick has at his disposal, it is a stark reminder of the very limited treatments that vets had at their disposal in the 1930's onwards, also how wonderfully simple life was in those days.
I am going to say what many others I am sure have done already - it is wonderfully timeless viewing - and has a calming nature on today's rush, rush, and don't care about anyone.
It would be nice to have today's drugs and medical advances coupled together with the life pace shown therein.

when they 1st came out on TV, i was still quite young and so didn't really get round to watching them all, so i decided to give them a go now, and i'm so glad i did, they were brilliant to watch, and i'm so glad i bought them.... i also found myself still annoyed at Tristan (which i vaguely remember hating back then), non-plussed by James, and loving Siegfried. as well as loving and hating numerous other re-occurring characters....
