I thought the author cleverly intertwined three major crimes in this novel.
One was by Ted Conkaffey, a Sydney police detective, who'd been accused of but not prosecuted for the rape of a 13 year old girl. Media attention had destroyed his life so he'd fled north to Crimson Lake (fictional), Cairns, for anonymity. The second was that of Amanda Pharrell who had spent 10 years behind bars for the stabbing murder of her high school friend. Ted and Amanda were employed as private investigators to look into the mystery disappearance of Jake Scully, a very successful writer of young adult Christian literature. That was the third crime.
The two detective characters are well drawn by the author. The story moves along quite quickly and is not cluttered by unnecessary information (padding). All three of the above mentioned crimes have a resolution fitting for this stage of the series. Overall an enjoyable read from this well-credentialed author. Highly recommended.

'One of the best crime thrillers of the year' LEE CHILD
'A masterful novel' HARLAN COBEN
'A bright new star' JAMES PATTERSON
Six minutes – that’s all it took to ruin Detective Ted Conkaffey’s life. Accused but not convicted of abducting a teenage girl, he escapes north, to the steamy, croc-infested wetlands of Crimson Lake.
Amanda Pharrell knows what it’s like to be public enemy number one. Maybe it’s her murderous past that makes her so good as a private investigator, tracking lost souls in the wilderness. Her latest target, missing author Jake Scully, has a life more shrouded in secrets than her own – so she enlists help from the one person in town more hated than she is: Ted Conkaffey.
But the residents of Crimson Lake are watching the pair’s every move. And for Ted, a man already at breaking point, this town is offering no place to hide . . .

An Australian writer who I think is up there with Stieg Larsson and Tami Hoag. Absolutely tremendous and her series Hades, Eden and the last one is the best trilogy I have read since the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Eden is comparable with Lisabeth Salander. So glad that Amazon recommended Candice Fox, and cudos to James Patterson for signing her up to help him with his Aussie novels, although Harry does sound a little bit like Nikki Liska created by Tami Hoag, but still enjoyed the book and looking forward to number 2 in the series.

The two protagonists, Amanda and Ted are not your usual heroes. They are not great at fighting, they can be fearful and don't always say the right things. They carry weighty psychological scars yet you somehow still follow their stories and get invested in their outcomes. A good read and a good break from the usual action fare.

Loved the book.
However, please don't put a sample of the third book in the series at the end. A couple of chapters in and it was quite clear that there was another book in between. At least mark the sample with "spoiler alert", or put a sample of the second book in the series instead.

An intriguing an interesting novel, fox is evocative and descriptive on the world she has created. Ted concaffey is sympathetic and likeable. Amanda Farrell is credibly eccentric. The mystery is well done and the story is very well told.

I love this book, except for one thing which I won't say as I really want people to read it. I was put onto this book by my favourite author James Patterson and I definitely will be lookin to read some of her other books. Well written Candice, it's good to read a great book by an Australian author.

This is a good story, interesting and fraught with stress. Not your usual same ole same ole. My only criticism is that it’s somewhat jerky, and I would prefer clear chapters.

Blown away

I don’t read books by Australian authors. I don’t know why. Maybe because they all write a lot of love stories. I’m not into that. I heard Candice Fox being interviewed on an Australian radio station about a month ago and thought, yeah I’ll give it a go.
I was blown away!! I loved the story line and the places, as an Australian, I could relate to. Amanda and Ted feel like old friends or neighbors. Both having bad back stories I can relate to.
I will definitely be reading more of Candice Fox in my very near future. As a matter of fact gotta go cos her next book, Redemption Point is on my list. As are all her others. I’m hooked. Better go take holidays ....so I can read

‘Crimson Lake’ and ‘Redemption Point’ form a more-or-less continuous story.
Reviewed in the United States on 18 February 2018Verified Purchase
I bought this book a year ago, and for some reason I didn’t get around to reading it. The sequel ‘Redemption Point’ has just been released, so I decided I’d better get going before reading the sequel.
I started it yesterday. It’s an incredible read, with great characters, marvellous plot twists and an ending I didn’t see coming.
The sequel follows directly on from where ‘Crimson Lake’ finishes, and has a short recapitulation of what happened previously, so it could be read separately.
But for maximum pleasure, it should be read first.

A really great read.

If you're into crime fiction, you have to read this book. It has a distinctly Australian flavour and the main characters are beautifully drawn. There are various interwoven sub-plots which have been well constructed and thought through. Can't wait to read the next book by Candice Fox.
