THE MOST GRIPPING CRIME THRILLER OF 2020 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“It's a non-stop page turner.”
“Brilliantly exciting, nail-biting read.”
“I didn’t see the end coming.”
Detectives Rowan Jackman and Marie Evans are told that their IT boss has disappeared. They soon suspect foul play. Orla Cracken, known as Orac, is no ordinary techie; she was once a field agent traveling abroad undercover, working for the government.
Meanwhile DC Robbie Melton discovers that two people, both urban explorers, have mysteriously disappeared while out exploring abandoned buildings. One went missing at a disused airfield, but was it a military base, or was it civilian?
The gruesome discovery of their decaying bodies found hanging in ancient church ruins bursts the case wide open, and Jackman and Evans are under pressure to find the killer.
It soon becomes clear that the murderer is targeting urban explorers, but why is he determined to track down and torture these innocent people, and how is the case connected to Orac’s mysterious past, still shrouded in secrecy?
THE LATEST CRIME THRILLER BY JOY ELLIS, SET IN THE LINCOLNSHIRE FENS, WILL KEEP YOU GUESSING — AND YOUR PULSE RACING — UNTIL THE VERY END.

About the author

I was born in Kent but spent most of my working life in London and Surrey. I was an apprentice florist to Constance Spry Ltd, a prestigious Mayfair shop that throughout the Sixties and Seventies teemed with both royalty and ‘real’ celebrities. What an eye-opener for a working-class kid from the Garden of England! I swore then, probably whilst I was scrubbing the floor or making the tea, that I would have a shop of my own one day. It took until the early Eighties, but I did it. Sadly the recession wiped us out, and I embarked on a series of weird and wonderful jobs; the last one being a bookshop manager. Surrounded by books all day, getting to order whatever you liked, and being paid for it! Oh bliss!
And now I live in a village in the Lincolnshire Fens with my partner, Jacqueline, and four Springer spaniels and one little rescue, Breton spaniel. I had been writing mysteries for years but never had the time to take it seriously. Now I write full-time, and as my partner is a highly decorated retired police officer; my choice of genre is a no-brainer! I have an on-tap police and judicial consultant, who makes exceedingly good tea!
I have set my crime thrillers here in the misty fens because I sincerely love the remoteness and airy beauty of the marshlands. This area is steeped in superstitions and lends itself so well to murder!
I am lucky enough to be one of the amazing Joffe Books team of authors and am really enjoying being able to spend time doing what I love... writing!

All our favourites are back, including Stella, although not as a police officer but involved with the old crowd of urbexers - people who climb into old ruined buildings and photograph them before they are lost forever. The rule is no harm to be done, no damage and no taking things. Only to take photos for remembering.
At the same time Orac, the brilliant IT operator goes missing to the concern of all and to Marie most of all. It seems Orac has mysteries of her own and now we are about to find out just one or two of them.
Between that and men disappearing on the old sites things get seriously confusing and it takes time and - finally - Orac to solve what is going on and why.
Don't miss this one. I am an avid fan of this series, but truly I think this is the best - so far :)
Overall very disappointing.
The murder mysteries & getting to know all of the on going characters.
Richard Armitage has a wonderful voice for audio & brings all the characters to life.

As soon as I started to read ‘They Disappeared’, I knew that I wasn’t going to doing anything else for the rest of the day other than read the book. To say that reading ‘They Disappeared’ became addictive is a massive understatement. I picked the book up only intending to dip a toe in the water and make a start on reading the book but I became that wrapped up in the story that I read more like half a dozen chapters. For me, ‘They Disappeared’ really was an unputdownable pageturner of a read. My Kindle wasn’t exactly glued to my hand but it might as well have been because it travelled everywhere with me. I couldn’t bear to miss a single second of the story. I seemed to speed through the story at the pace of Usain Bolt. At one point the pages seemed to turn that quickly that the page numbers all blurred into one. I soon got to the end of the story and I had to bid farewell to Jackman and Evans.
‘They Disappeared’ is superbly written but then I think that to be true of Joy’s books in general. She certainly knows how to grab your attention from the start and draw you into the story. For me, the story hit the ground running and maintained a fast pace throughout. In fact reading this book felt more like watching a Hollywood film with all the drama, intrigue, suspense and espionage. There were more twists and turns to this story than you would find on a ‘Snakes & Ladders’ board. Reading this book felt like being on one hell of a scary and unpredictable rollercoaster ride with no idea in which direction the story is going to take you next. For me, ‘They Disappeared’ is a tightly plotted, superbly written page turner of a book that gripped me from start to finish and had me on the edge of my seat throughout.
In short, I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘They Disappeared’ and I would recommend it to other readers. I will certainly be reading more of Joy’s work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board has to be 5* out of 5*.‘

I had tried to avoid Joy Ellis because of her use of stilted dialogue, and the book just mentioned managed to avoid that to some extent. In They Disappeared there are a couple of plots running simultaneously and which I would have enjoyed if it hadn't been for the endless cries of 'oh my' on every other page.
Once again the dialogue was awful, everyone was over chummy and everything was too perfect. I thought their detective skills were dreadful, as I'd managed to work out who the killer was at an early stage.
Definitely no more Joy Ellis for me.

I think the area where the books are written adds to the atmosphere and whilst I, myself haven’t been to this part of the country, you can feel the mists enveloping and the change of weather, all make it a bit spooky.
The book starts off with Orac who’s missing, I was quite upset as I thought something had happened to her, especially with her background as a “spook”. Coupled with two people who are urban explorers going missing the team have their work cut out.
I didn’t really know what urban explorers did, and, after finding out, I for one, wouldn’t be seen dead in an old abandoned building!! When three bodies are found hanging upside down, it was strange because I immediately thought of “the hanged man” a tarot card and could picture it quite clearly.
As the story unfolds, you get a better insight into Orac’s life, and her past. This, and Marie’s seem to be improving. Rowan doesn’t seem to do much horse riding atm, but all the main characters were there and of course Cat from Nikki Galena’s team.
I must just say, with all the books I read, I didn’t see the end coming.
My thanks to Joy and Joffe Publishers for the ARC.

Being from Northern Ireland, I immediately took notice when Jackman called her Northern Irish. Well if she was from Northern Ireland, why was she in Donegal going over her past life. Donegal is in the Republic of Ireland. Also, did she work for the British Secret Service? Again, I find this a tad far fetched, as someone from her background (based on her Irish name) would rarely want to serve in the British Secret Services. Maybe I’m nit picking, but the whole Orac and her friend Dara story had me confused, perhaps Joy Ellis doesn’t understand the complexities of Northern Ireland and that the Republic of Ireland is indeed a different country. So I’m none the wiser as to what nationality Orac was really meant to be. It distracted me and somewhat took my attention away from the major storyline.
