This is a review for the 50th anniversary Blu Ray of Dad's Army The Movie from Mediumrare.
So what do you get?
A one disc release containing the movie and special features.
A reversible sleeve with alternate artwork.
A slipcase.
A 32 page collectors booklet.
The disc first then. The picture and audio are sublime, they really have done a great job restoring this. There is zero grain and the picture is rich. Hats off to medium-rare. The running time is 95 minutes, which is 5 minutes longer than my previous Dvd release, so interested to see what those additional scenes are.
The special features. I have to admit for a 50th anniversary edition this is a little thin, I was expecting a lot more and can't help being left feeling a little deflated and let down. You get 2 home guard news reals totalling just under 4 minutes and a trailer. I'll be honest it just feels lazy, there's so much Mediumrare could have done here.
The reversible sleeve is OK, as is the slipcase.
Th collectors booklet is glossy but flimsy. However it is interesting and full of all the information that should have been in the special features.
All in all its an average release at best and I took a star off for the lack of special features. That said, credit where its due, it is a wonderful picture and it's great to see this film so lovingly restored to how it should look.

not a patch on the TV series

This is a review of the blu-ray movie version of Dad's Army made in 1971 (for some reason the Amazon reviews also have reviews for compilations of BBC TV episodes).
I'm a massive fan of the TV series but the movie version doesn't add anything and a lot of the scenes have been taken directly from TV episodes. This is partly understandable since at the time (1971) many people had missed the first episodes and there were no video recorders or regular repeats.
It's nice that the whole thing is shot on film (not the video in the studio / film on location type shooting that was common in British TV at the time) although I wonder how much it would have cost to have the "germans" actually speaking german to each other instead of English with a funny accent (did people in the 70's really think that was sensible??).
The subtitles are full of mistakes as if written by a non English speaker (Pike has a CARVING knife on his broom handle, not a CARBON knife).
The booklet with the disk also has several grammar mistakes such as "creating something to promote the this has all the hallmarks" which make it a bit hard to follow
I like the movie version of On The Buses and Man About the House but this movie version of a 70's TV series is instantly forgettable.

DAD@S ARMY BLURAY from MEDIUM RARE (50th Anniv. Edition)
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 March 2022Verified Purchase
Whenever I watch this film with the wonderful original cast...I end up disapointed. I think it's me, because basically there is nothing wrong with the way the film is written/directed, and acted. It just feels wrong, and only occasionally did it raise a chuckle (it involves a horse!). It makes me a bit sad, and I can't find anyone to really criticise, but watching any episode of the TV series is STILL a pleasure (even doddery/daft Corp Jones). So...4 stars...good quality transfer, sound and subtitles and some extras listed here. Sadly I can't help but feel the film lost the "Dad's Army" charm even though the principal actors are all on top form. (Pity there wasn't enough time to feature Bill Pertwee and the vicar, and ,nothing at all against Liz Fraser...but why?)

Great To See It On Blu Ray

Its Great Film To Watch Also its Nice to See It On Blu Ray For The First Time The Only Problem Was that my copy had crease marks on the spine of the art work and the slip cover. The Picture is a lot better than dvd but i would wait for the price to come down because i don't think it's worth £14.99 for a old film.

A Superb Blu-Ray at Last

Well pleased with this Dads Army Blu-Ray. In my opinion the transfer to Blu-Ray has worked and the colours are pin point considering the age of the film. Well pleased with this purchase. Thank you
