About the author

Susan Adrian is a fourth-generation Californian who now lives in the beautiful Big Sky country of Montana. She got a degree in English from the University of California, Davis, and spent a year abroad at the University of Sussex in England—which started a lifelong fascination with all things British, particularly British stories for kids. She is the author of the holiday fantasy NUTCRACKED and two thrilling books for teens. These days she splits her time as a writer, scientific editor, and mom. She's been to London many times, but hasn't yet been invited to Neverland.

I found the jumping perspective in many chapters pulled me out of the book. But the story was interesting enough for me to finish

This book was grittier and felt more fully realized. The author took the solid framework from the first book and really fleshed it out here. The characters had more depth, the world felt more realistic, the tension was more...tension-ier....(that can be a word, right?). The pacing was solid. The flow between narratives worked well. The final climax was nicely done. Overall a solid book, no matter your age.
The few criticisms:
I never fully bought into Myka. She seemed to be caught between precociousness and preciousness never quite landing. On the other hand, that is pretty accurate as to what tweens are actually like, so maybe this is less a comment on characterization and more an issue of personal character preference.
The section involving the riddle-like serum hunt felt a bit off. There was a tension missing from the scenes for me. I felt it either needed more complicated clues or an active villain/pursuit. Without that, it just felt a bit connect-the-dots.
The new character introduced felt like a bit of a missed opportunity. There was some good potential there but it didn't feel like it really got explored effectively.
