Darkness Visible

I agree with some reviewers that this was a bit slow to take off, but once it does, this is a lively, vibrant affair, a picaresque adventure set amongst the underclasses of Elizabethan England, with its protagonist Henry, who being black or a 'moor' is viewed with perpetual suspicion and frequent hostility. An orphan, living in a slum area known as 'The Gap' with a woman called Joan, her sister Agnes, (who both have 'witch; like powers) and her sister's children Mary and Matthew, they eke a living by pickpocketing, until things take a dramatic turn and Henry's fortunes change briefly...this plot heavy book comes across like a Tudor version of 'Oliver Twist' with more than a hint of magic and the supernatural (Henry can translate books written in any language just by looking and feeling them) particularly when it includes real life historical characters such as Dr John Dee and a walk-on part for a certain William Shakespeare (none too convincingly it has to be said). It's a book of mixed delights, the occasional use of Elizabethan words and slang together with more contemporary phrasing do make it a lively if disjointed historical read, and the ending feels like it may be set up for a sequel. Nevertheless this is entertaining, and with my school librarian hat on I would recommend only for year 10 onwards because of the language and content. Definitely ambitious though and always good to shine a light on forgotten histories, Akala's novel debut is at times a beguiling read.

An amazing read

I have read the authors previous nonfiction works so I was assured that I would like this. The amount of research that has gone into this in order to bring Elizabethan slang must’ve took some work in itself.
The story never really went where I was expecting and it kept twisting and turning which was really enjoyable. The stories been left in the position for a sequel with lots of questions that need to be answered.
One of the best books I’ve read in the past couple of years.

A dramatic and historical tale
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 September 2021Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this. It’s got a lot of interesting historical details that might be useful for KS3 or KS4 readers, and the story is dramatic and engaging (I don’t want to give spoilers!) and the style of writing is accessible to the majority of readers aged 11+. The main character deals with issues related to racial prejudice, a lost relationship with a mother, and also writes sonnets in iambic pentameter too. Definitely worth reading.

Not impressed

I tried so hard to get into reading this book, but had to stop! Poorly written and at the point where I stopped reading, couldn't tell what the story was about.

Quite good

It was not quick to latch on to the story but once it picked up pace it was very engaging and I was invested into Henry’s story arc. The end didn’t tie off the loose ends enough so I am wondering if a sequel will be written. Despite a feeling of incompletion I enjoyed Akala’s writing.
