About the author

I’m Danica and I write under the names D. S. Butler, Dani Oakley and Danica Britton. If you’ve stumbled across this author page after having read one of my books, thank you very much for your support.
I write mysteries in many different flavours — some grittier than others. So far, I've written two standalone psychological thrillers: Lost Child and Her Missing Daughter. I also write a detective series set in London, which features one of my favourite characters, Jack Mackinnon.
The books I write as Dani Oakley are set in the East End of London. They are full of gangsters and strong female characters.

The plot for the story was good and the author interwove the lives of the characters effectively, but I felt something was missing. This didn't flow at the same pace as the previous book. I think maybe some parts were unnecessary or needed more of a hook to maintain interest. This wasn't the case throughout, some parts were very good, but it did run flat at points.
By the time I got to the end, whilst the climax to the story wasn't a bad ending, I had lost the excitement I usually feel when hurtling towards the climax of a book.
Despite everything I've said above, I am glad I read this book and will be continuing with the others in the series.
As I say, it wasn't bad, but if you can only take a couple of books wherever you are, I would get the first one and another one from the series.
Despite my comments above, I do enjoy this author and will be continuing with the other books in the series. However as I said if you're limited, I would choose the first one and try another one rather than this one. Hope this helps and isn't too vague!

However, I did like the number of red herrings and the twists and turns in the tale which kept me hooked right up to the end. The quality of writing is very good in places and can be emotionally hard hitting when you least expect it. In this regard, some readers may find the short sections relating to some acts of animal cruelty a little unsettling.

This second book has improved but still lacks a bit in places. I don't feel as engaged with the Mackinnon character as I should by now because I find him a bit wooden. I could not easily identify his goal outside of the usual 'identify the killer' aim.
The plot itself was okay based on a solid story idea but on a few occasions I found myself questioning a choice of dialogue here or a description there. It's little things that stop me reading mid sentence or paragraph that stick in my mind. It stops the 'flow' and leads me to put the book down rather than turn pages. I would have thought the publisher may have picked these things up?
Overall, its a good read and I'm looking forward to book 3.

A man is found poisoned by the deadly toxin aconite and the note found at the scene leads Detective Sergeant Jack Mackinnon to a University of Oxford laboratory. The staff and students are desperate to hide their association with the victim. DS Jack Mackinnon is is leading the case but the closer he gets to the truth the more he feels his own family could be at risk.
Cleverly written plot and the characters are starting to leave their mark on me making this a very good police procedural thriller. I feel a lot more confident approaching the third book after reading this than I did after book 1.
