About the author

I’m Danica and I write under the names D. S. Butler, Dani Oakley and Danica Britton. If you’ve stumbled across this author page after having read one of my books, thank you very much for your support.
I write mysteries in many different flavours — some grittier than others. So far, I've written two standalone psychological thrillers: Lost Child and Her Missing Daughter. I also write a detective series set in London, which features one of my favourite characters, Jack Mackinnon.
The books I write as Dani Oakley are set in the East End of London. They are full of gangsters and strong female characters.

Too many minor characters easy to get lost in the story line .

The plot is different enough with a couple of missing girls, then the murder of the very worried brother of the first. The plot then revolves around a dancing academy that the two girls attended. The owners of the said academy are a really strange family who are suspected of something dodgy almost from the start. It then transpires that up to seven or eight other girls also from the academy have disappeared.
DS Mackinnon seems to be an amiable chap, and gets to lead the investigation along with DC Collins. The murder gets handed to MIT leaving the missing girls for Mackinnon and Collins to deal with. Then it's realised the two cases are linked.
There isn't a lot of action in this book with Mackinnon and Collins doing mostly 'grunt' work that DS's and DC's have to do. If Mackinnon were a DI, we'd probably see more in depth police procedural work. But perhaps he will get a promotion, and we'll be able to see what he can do.
Collins was the one who took the initial report from the brother of the first missing girl, and when he gets murdered, Collins feels somewhat responsible.
We know the police got 'whodunnit', but I feel more could have been made of the ending. It just seemed a bit abrupt. As this is the first book in the series, perhaps future endings will be more informative.

On reflection this is a good grounding and introduction to the new characters and was written in the familiar way that I enjoy. DS Jack Mackinnon is investigating the disappearance of a missing Polish student, Anya Blonski when a second girl goes missing from the same academy. Mackinnon is forced to consider a serial killer may be stalking the city.
Not the most exciting book I have read but entertaining.
