3.0 out of 5 starsAnother reasonable read.
Reviewed in Australia on 10 June 2020
This book I'd classify as a light reading exercise, not one that requires a deal of mental effort. It is, to me, reasonably sound in its plot lines. What I find difficult are the thoughts that many of the characters have. Those thoughts seem to be rather shallow and repetitious. Having said these things, though, I'll readily admit that it is far superior to any work of fiction I could put together. My star rating is on how I compare this effort to all the other books I've written reviews about. Recommended as light reading.

Great read. Book 3 and I am really enjoying getting to know and understand the characters. Jack and Chloe and her girls, Charlotte too. Have to keep reading the next book to find out. Wonderful plots and settings.

This is an excellent series. The story line flows so well you’ve read another chapter without realising it. Highly recommend for lovers of great detective stories.

As soon as I had finished my first D S Butler book, Deadly Revenge, that features DS Jack Mackinnon, I ordered another straight away. I'm sure I'll work my way through other books by this author

I enjoyed this read as I did it’s predecessors ... a believable plot made more fascinating by the alternative chapters for each part of the story ... some as history others in the current. Well written.

4.0 out of 5 stars Memories of on-call

I found the storyline a bit slow but descriptions of pathology brought back memories of being on-call in harm/blood transfusion. I started work at 8.30 am went on call at 5pm and had to be back at work the next day at 8.30 even if you were up all night. These days most hospitals have gone to shifts.
I did find it a bit irritating that the colours of the tubes were wrong. It should have been turquoise for coagulation, purple for full blood count, pink for transfusion and gold for biochemistry. You also rarely saw a doctor in the lab. We were known as lab techs never scientific officers although that’s our official title.
As I said the story was slow and too much time spent on the mechanics of coagulation.
I find it hard to believe that a sergeant would have as much power as McKinnon seemed to display.
I was pleased when I finished the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Storyline everyone could relate to

I enjoyed the plot of this book and I like D.S. Butler's descriptive style of writing. You almost don't notice how the author uses very detailed descriptions to a picture in your mind without allowing them to become boring.

I think readers can relate to many of the things in this book. Many of us will not have experienced any of the things in the book thankfully, but the way the story plays out, you may question how you would react if in the same position. I'd like to think most people would always take the moral high ground, but what wouldn't you want to do for your child even if you didn't act on it?

I did find this book a little slower to get into than the author's other books, but I recommend persevering. It is a good story.

I think readers of Angela Marsons or Caroline Mitchell might enjoy this author although the style is slightly different.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deadly griping read!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 June 2012

Deadly revenge is the second book in the series of DS Mackinnon, it can be read as a stand alone, so don't worry if you haven't read the 1st one. Deadly Revenge is much darker & grittier than Deadly Motive. D S Butler has really found her niche here, with her thrilling style of writing. DS Mackinnon is on the case of suspected contamination of drugs., as the story unfolds it reveals hidden secrets & plots of revenge, it grips you with a sense of realism & and fear of the dreadful horrors that happen to the victims. As each chapter unfolds it brings you deeper & deeper behind the scenes of the drug dealing world with lots of twist, without the need of shocking violence. Despite the topic & lifestyles you feel sympathy for non stereotypical characters you would normally look down on. This book certainly packs a powerful punch and Butler gives Martina Cole (without the swearing) a run for her money in this terrific gritty crime novel.

I'm enjoying reading these well written books, only problem is once I have started reading which is usually late evening I have trouble putting the book down. Reading into the small hour's is something I need to stop. So I read light hearted books in between to at least get a decent night's sleep.
