An ever-increasing malice. A mind-numbing terror. The seeds of horror are sown in this collection of Junji Ito’s earliest works.
A vengeful family hides an army deserter for eight years after the end of World War II, cocooning him in a false reality where the war never ended. A pair of girls look alike, but they’re not twins. And a boy’s nightmare threatens to spill out into the real world…
This hauntingly strange story collection showcases a dozen of Junji Ito’s earliest works from when he burst onto the horror scene, sowing fresh seeds of terror.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

I enjoyed all the stories. You really get to see Ito’s work transform from these earlier illustrations to Uzumaki. Once again, I am left traumatised 😐 Thank you, Junji Ito for always delivering ✨✨🐈🥰

While pretty good by most standards, it's pretty clear from both the art and the more conventional and simplistic stories that he was still becoming the master of creepiness that he would someday be. While not bad by any means, it just isn't the utterly superb seem in his later work.

I loved this collection, flawless start to finish. No monsters or gross out, but the monsters really are inside ourselves and the ones we love.

An entertaining horror anthology

If you've read any of his other books you know what to expect. There are some very original stories in here. Like many Japanese writers he doesn't worry all the time about the how's and why's. Which can be a little disappointing sometimes. One story Bullied I didn't really understand what he was getting at. Possibly if I knew more about the Japanese culture I would get it better. The title story Deserter is pretty good I don't think anyone will be surprised by the ending and there are some things hinted at that are then just dropped which is disappointing.
The art as always is lovely with some scenes of out right horror.

another excellent collection of shorts

What can I say? I love Ito and this is another excellent collection of shorts. No body horror this time and the most chilling story involves the horrors of humankind. It is needless to say the art is stunning. Another great Ito for my collection.

And another one to my collection

I personally think this is his weakest book, but that's understandable when you see that these are his earliest works. You can see it in the writing style, the art style and the characters. But it still gave me some chills. Especially the stories: Where the sandman lives, Deserter and Bullied
It's very nice to see how the master of horror started one day and how developed. I think it's very good to see that even he started at some point. I think this Manga is not a good first choice because it might give you a wrong view on all his other stories but it's a great book if you already are familliar with some of his works. At least this is how I feel towards it.

Some of Ito’s earlier works, amazing stories.

Ito’s earliest works. Each Story has a unique and creepy story line and there is vibe of freshness as usual but artwork is not as detailed as we can see in his later part of career, that is ok as he was beginning his career as a newcomer when these stories were created. Worth buying for a horror and Ito fan.
